The Foundation Stage Age 0-5 years. Learning through play, exploration and exciting, practical experiences. RF

Aims of the meeting today The main purpose of today’s meeting is to explain the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and how your child will be learning throughout the year. We will also demonstrate how we teach reading and phonics and provide you with ideas on how you can continue to support your child at home.  RF

There are three Prime Areas of learning in the Foundation Stage: Personal, Social and Emotional Development Communication and Language Physical Development   Together with four Specific Areas: Literacy (phonics, reading, writing) Mathematics (number, shape, space and measure) Understanding the World Expressive Arts and Design RF

Numicon We have introduced Numicon this as another resource to help support with teaching number. Sometimes children can struggle with knowing what number represents. It is bright and tactile the children love playing with it and making numbers with it. There will be a maths workshop later on in the year to give you more ideas on how to support your child with maths at home. SF

Home Learning journey SF

Stay and play Parents/Carers are invited into the classrooms to experience and watch how we teach phonics, writing and maths. You then have the opportunity to explore activities and resources we use at school. SF

Supporting reading and phonics at home Children learn to read using picture clues, letter sounds and sight word knowledge. Children change their reading book on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. They will be encouraged to work through pink, to red and then to yellow level books and beyond by the end of their Reception Year. RF

Reading Find a quiet, relaxed time  Look at the front cover, title, illustration, author, illustrator, blurb. Predict what might happen in the story. Track the text. Point out sight words. Praise achievement. Check for understanding. Ask questions about the story plot, characters. Discuss likes, dislikes. Extension for more able – pick out new tricky words and write them down. Within the text try to find word patterns sh, th, wh, ch, ee, ea, oo etc. Encourage fluency and expression. RF

Phonics We will be learning our letter sounds in groups Phonics We will be learning our letter sounds in groups. We start with s, a, t, p, i, n. If your child already knows pure letter sounds we will move them on and begin learning digraphs. We assess and tailor the curriculum to each child; giving them the opportunity to progress at their own pace. We support and challenge every child. We aim for each child to know and apply the above sounds by the end of their Reception Year. CW
