VOCABULARY-Chapters 15-31 Fifth Grade Newsletter Quinones/Lupton September 18-22, 2017 Science Reading Math Your child is working on Physical Science Unit 2, Electricity and Magnetism. He/she has a study guide to prepare for the Vocabulary quiz this Friday. It will cover just the 8 vocab. Words at the top of the study guide. The test over the complete study guide is scheduled for Tue. Oct. 3rd. Your child completed the Math Unit 1 assessment on Monday. I hope that the Math journal problems help your child prepare for the test. Look for his/her grade on next week’s weekly papers. Your child will be starting Unit 2, Adding/Subtracting decimal numbers. We will continue reading Steal Away Home by Lois Ruby. Students will focus on summarizing and point of view this week.. Students will continue to practice with the vocabulary for Chapters 15-31 this week. Students will have a vocabulary quiz over this words next week. VOCABULARY-Chapters 15-31 catapult- fling; heave; launch feigned- pretended; fake avidly- excitedly; enthusiastically jaundiced- yellow or yellowish discoloration of the skin, whites of the eyes, etc. due to an increase of bile pigments in the blood quest- a search make to achieve a goal snidely- in a hasty superior manner discreet- cautious; careful; watchful carcass- the dead body of an animal quinine- a medicine used chiefly in the treatment of resistant forms of malaria abolitionist- a person who supported the ending of slavery in the United States Social Studies Schedule Your child will begin Unit 2. Your child will learn about the role of the cattle trails in the late 19th century with a focus on the Great Western Trail and the Chisholm Trail. He/she will also learn how the Wright Brothers, Alexander Graham Bell, George Washington Carver, and Thomas Edison impacted American life. Students will receive a study guide on Tuesday to help them prepare for next week’s test. Fri, Sept. 22nd Science Vocab. Quiz Tue., Sept. 26 4 H meeting Wed., Sept. 26-Book Fair for our classes Thur., Sept. 28 PTO 3rd grade performance Fri., Sept. 29 Spirit Day; Unit 2 Social Studies Test Grammar Your child will learn how to identify and use prepositions this week. He/she will also learn how to write a narrative essay.
