Welcome to our SATs information evening

What are SATs? Statutory Assessment Tests (and Tasks) Your child will take SATs twice during their time at school –Year 2 and Year 6. They are tested in maths and English (writing, reading and SPAG - spelling, punctuation and grammar). SATs aren’t about passing or failing, but are used to reflect how your child is progressing and a chance to assess teaching and learning.

They will not even know they are doing SATs! We call the SATs quizzes or special booklets. The children will work on them during their lessons. Other lessons will carry on as usual. All schools have to complete the papers during the month of May. We will make sure that the children complete these slowly and a timetable will be put together to make sure that they are spread out throughout the month. We ask that no holiday is taken during this month. Children will have to catch up if they miss a paper and they often find it harder to complete it alone, rather than being in a group.

PAPERS English What will the children have to do? Writing – there will be no formal writing test. This will be based on teacher assessment. However… SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) – they will complete a spelling test, a grammar and punctuation test and a short written task to assess handwriting, use of grammar and use of punctuation. Reading – the children will complete reading comprehension booklets- the texts in the reading booklets will cover a range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry and will assess their comprehension and understanding. Some questions are multiple choice or selected response, others require short answers and some require an extended response or explanation.

PAPERS Maths The children will complete 2 maths papers – arithmetic and problem solving Questions will be varied including multiple choice, matching, true/false, completing a chart or table or drawing a shape. Some questions will also require children to show or explain their working out.

There is lots of useful information and tips on this website. How can you help? There is lots of useful information and tips on this website. http://www.theschoolrun.com/ks1-english-sats-what-is-tested-in-the-y2-assessments Ensure your child has the best possible attendance at school. Support your child with any homework tasks. Reading, spelling and arithmetic (e.g. times tables) are always good to practise. Talk to your child about what they have learnt at school and what book(s) they are reading (the character, the plot, their opinion). Make sure your child has a good sleep and healthy breakfast every morning!

Reporting to parents Once the tests have been done, we mark them a score is issued and this will be reported in the end of year report.
