6.3 Water and Solutions

Polar Molecules Molecules that have an unequal distribution of charges Meaning, they have oppositely charged regions.

Hydrogen Bonds A weak interaction involving a hydrogen atom. In water, the electrostatic attraction is called a hydrogen bond.

Mixture A combination of two or more substances in which each substance retains its individual characters and properties.

Solution Another name given for a homogeneous mixture.

Solvent Is a substance in which another substance is dissolved.

Solute The substance that is dissolved in the solvent

pH The measure of concentration of H+ in a solution.

Acids Substances that release hydrogen ions when dissolved in water

Bases Substances that release hydroxide ions when dissolved in water

Buffers Mixtures that can react with acids and bases to keep the pH in a particular range.
