1.1 Variables and Expressions 8/22/16

Common Core State Standards Interpret parts of an expression such as terms, factors, and coefficients.

New Terms Algebraic Expression Variable Term Factor Product Power Exponent Base

Definitions Algebraic Expressions – Consists of sums, subtractions, quotient and/or products of numbers and variables. It does not have an equal sign in it. IE 5x + 6, x - 4, 2(x + 2)

Variables Symbols used to represent unspecified numbers or values. Any letter may be used as a variable. IE x , y , a, t

Term An expression may be a number, a variable, or a product or quotient of numbers and variables. IE 10d, 2x , 4 , a

Factors In a multiplication expression, the quantities being multiplied are factors. The result is the product. IE xy , x(y) , (x)(y)

Product The answer to a multiplication problem. IE 3 x 4 = 12

Exponent Indicates the number of times the base is used as a factor. IE 43 25

Base In an expression of the form xn , the base in x. IE 42 x3

Write a verbal expression for each algebraic expression. Three times x to the fourth power 5z2 + 16 5 times z to the second power plus sixteen

Write a verbal expression for each algebraic expression One is less than w 2n3 - 3 The difference of twice a number cubed and 3

Translating Verbal to Algebraic Expressions Operation Verbal Phrases Addition more than, sum, plus, increased by, added to Subtraction Less than, subtract from, difference, decreased, minus Multiplication Product of multiplied by, times, of Division quotient of, divided by

Write an algebraic for each verbal expression A number t more than 6. 6 + t or t + 6 10 less than the product of 7 and f 7f - 10
