Faculty Salary Study Comparison to AAU Data Exchange Institutions Office of Faculty Development Faculty Advisory Committee Louma Ghandour, Director Karim Al-Zand (Music) Michael Byrne (Social Sciences) Gustavo Grullon (Business) Kathleen Matthews (Natural Sciences, Chair) Donald Morrison (Humanities)  Marcia O’Malley (Engineering)

Faculty Advisory Committee – Office of Faculty Development Charged by Faculty Senate to review salary compensation patterns Planning to rotate different approaches First year goal Use AAU Data Exchange (AAUDE) Information Incorporate cost-of-living information from Runzheimer group that is part of the AAUDE data— Conducted every 3 years based on institutional zip code with focus on housing Last analysis for 2013-2014 — started process with this AY Next survey using this methodology will be with newest Runzheimer information (2016-2017) Will repeat survey every 3 years for longitudinal information

AAUDE Institutions Public AAUs Private AAUs Georgia Institute of Technology Iowa State University Michigan State University The Ohio State University Pennsylvania State University Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey Stony Brook University Texas A&M University University of Arizona University at Buffalo University of California, Davis University of California, Berkeley University of California, Irvine University of California, Los Angeles University of California, San Diego University of California, Santa Barbara University of Colorado Boulder University of Florida University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign University of Iowa University of Kansas University of Maryland at College Park University of Michigan University of Minnesota, Twin Cities University of Missouri-Columbia University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill University of Oregon University of Pittsburgh University of Texas at Austin University of Virginia University of Wisconsin-Madison Private AAUs Boston University Brown University California Institute of Technology Carnegie Mellon University Case Western Reserve University Columbia University Cornell University Duke University Harvard University Johns Hopkins University Massachusetts Institute of Technology New York University Northwestern University Princeton University Rice University Stanford University Tulane University of Chicago University of Pennsylvania University of Rochester Vanderbilt University Washington University in St. Louis Yale University

Limits on Data/Data Use Cannot identify any institution (except Rice) Cannot identify any person by virtue of low number of faculty in a specific category Need to coordinate cost-of-living analysis with year used for effective analysis Architecture and Music schools determined that comparatives were not necessarily AAU institutions Will pursue independent analyses Can join future AAUDE analyses

Analytical Process Examined each School as an entire entity Examined two departments within Schools with departments Large departments were utilized to ensure anonymity Normalized AAUDE average salaries to Rice=1 Note that AAUDE does not provide median or standard error information Introduced cost-of-living correction for each institution based on zip code-specific information provided by AAUDE (=COL-adjusted salaries) Compared COL-adjusted salaries for Rice separately to private and public institutions Placed Rice salary in quintile groups for ease of comparison and generated graphical representations
