What is Virtualization? Bentley Systems, Incorporated 4/29/2018 What is Virtualization? Virtualization is a technique for deploying technologies. Virtualization creates a level of indirection or an abstraction layer between a physical object and the managing or using application. -Site definition in Google © 2002 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Who provides Virtualization? Bentley Systems, Incorporated 4/29/2018 Who provides Virtualization? VMWare – VMWare WorkStation, GSX, ESX and Virtual Server. Microsoft – Virtual PC, Microsoft Virtual Server There are a number of other smaller providers of virtualization software. © 2002 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Bentley Systems, Incorporated 4/29/2018 Without Virtualization Break dependencies between OS and hardware Manage OS and application as single unit by encapsulating them into VMs Strong fault and security isolation VMs are hardware-independent: they can be provisioned anywhere With Virtualization Single OS image per machine Software and hardware tightly coupled Running multiple applications on same machine often creates conflict Underutilized, inflexible, costly infrastructure © 2002 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Why Virtualize ProjectWise? Bentley Systems, Incorporated 4/29/2018 Why Virtualize ProjectWise? Server Consolidation Requirement Maximizing server potential Ease of deployment © 2002 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Server virtualization Bentley Systems, Incorporated 4/29/2018 Server virtualization Benefits Increase hardware utilization by sharing hardware resources across a large number of virtual machines Use less hardware for business continuity Virtual Machines Virtual Server Physical Server © 2002 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Bentley Systems, Incorporated 4/29/2018 Cluster and Fail Over Clustering- provides load balancing and two-node failover, which allows a second server to take over if the first one fails. © 2002 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

ProjectWise In a Cluster Bentley Systems, Incorporated 4/29/2018 ProjectWise In a Cluster How To Setup Projectwise In A Clustered Environment © 2002 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

ProjectWise In a Cluster Bentley Systems, Incorporated 4/29/2018 ProjectWise In a Cluster Requirements A working cluster configuration A database server to host the Projectwise database, this should not be part of the Projectwise cluster One or more file transfer servers to provide file storage, these should not be part of the Projectwise cluster © 2002 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Microsoft Cluster Setting Bentley Systems, Incorporated 4/29/2018 Microsoft Cluster Setting Including Port Rule Affinity Options in Your Design None •You want to ensure even load balancing among cluster hosts. •Client traffic is stateless (for example, HTTP traffic). Single •You want to ensure that requests from a specific client (IP address) are sent to the same cluster host. •Client state is maintained across TCP connections (for example, HTTPS traffic). Class C •Client requests from a Class C IP address range (instead of a single IP address) are sent to the same cluster host. •Clients use multiple proxy servers to access the cluster, and they appear to have multiple IP addresses within the same Class C IP address range. © 2002 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

ProjectWise In a Cluster Bentley Systems, Incorporated 4/29/2018 ProjectWise In a Cluster Configure the database A database should be configured to host the Projectwise database using the standard installation procedures. An ODBC data source should then be created on each machine in the cluster pointing to the Projectwise database. It is required that the ODBC data sources are identical in each machine. © 2002 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

ProjectWise In a Cluster Bentley Systems, Incorporated 4/29/2018 ProjectWise In a Cluster Install Projectwise on each machine in the cluster. All installation paths and other details should be the same on each machine. After Projectwise is installed, make sure all Projectwise services are stopped on each machine. © 2002 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

ProjectWise In a Cluster Bentley Systems, Incorporated 4/29/2018 ProjectWise In a Cluster Create the datasource The datasource entries in the dmskrnl.cfg file can be created in several ways Create the datasource on one of the cluster machines before it is added to the cluster using normal procedures This is where you want to copy the dmskrnl from Integration Server to another Integration Server. © 2002 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Clustering with ProjectWise Bentley Systems, Incorporated 4/29/2018 Clustering with ProjectWise All dmskrnl.cfg files across the entire cluster should be identical. © 2002 Bentley Systems, Incorporated
