8.1 Day I: Hypothesis Testing (Traditional) By the end of class you will be able to explain the vocabulary and situations involved with hypothesis testing.

Investigating Claims Do the makers of ActivAid have a valid claim? Does the light bulb spray affect suntans?

Hypothesis Testing Vocabulary Statistical Hypothesis: a conjecture about a population parameter (may or may not be true) Null Hypothesis: ____: Statistical hypothesis that states there is NO difference between a parameter and a specific value. Alternative Hypothesis:____: Statistical hypothesis that there IS a difference between a parameter and a specific value.

ActivAid Claims Null Hypothesis: Alternative Hypothesis:

Light Bulb Spray Claims What is the Null Hypothesis? What is the Alternative Hypothesis?

A product claims to increase gas mileage in cars A product claims to increase gas mileage in cars. The average gas mileage of all cars driven in the U.S. is 22mi/gal. 500 cars are given the product. The average gas mileage of those cars is 23mi/gal. State both hypotheses.

Three Hypothesis Test Situations Test Name: Two-Tailed Test Right Tailed Test Left Tailed Test H 1 k m = ¹ > <

A product claims to increase gas mileage in cars A product claims to increase gas mileage in cars. The average gas mileage of all cars driven in the U.S. is 22mi/gal. 500 cars are given the product. The average gas mileage of those cars is 23mi/gal. What type of test is this?

Practice A medical researcher is interested in finding out whether a new medication will have any undesirable side effects. The researcher is particularly concerned with the pulse rate of the patients who take the medication. Will the pulse rate increase, decrease, or remain unchanged after a patient takes the medication? The researcher knows that the mean pulse rate for the population under study is 82 beats per minute. The hypotheses for this situation are This is called a______________ hypothesis test.

More Vocabulary Statistical Test: Uses data obtained from a sample to make a decision about whether the null hypothesis should be rejected. Test Value: The numerical value obtained from the statistical test.

Types of Errors (justice system) Type I: Reject the null hypothesis when it is true (innocent person convicted) Type II: Do not reject the null hypothesis when it is false (guilty is set free)

A look at our justice system:
