Limiting Reactant Lab

Objectives Determine which reagent will limit how much a chemical reaction produces. Be sure to accomplish these four objectives to fully satisfy the main objective. Write the balanced chemical equation you are analyzing. Identify the solid Determine which reactant is acting as the limiting reactant. Calculate the percent yield of the reaction.

Material Used – Design the procedure and include data table 0.20 M Potassium phosphate solution 0.20 M Calcium chloride solution 10 mL graduated cylinder Filter Paper Funnel 50 mL beaker 100 mL beaker Iron Ring and Ring stand Washbottle with DI water

Go ahead and get started.

Calculations Calculate the number of moles of each material that you have. M = mol/L. Convert the volume of each compound you measured from mL to L. Mulitply the volume (in L) by the Molarity (M) of each solution to determine the number of moles of each reactant. Use your mole ratios to determine the limiting reactant (remember that’s the one that runs out first) Use the moles of limiting reactant to calculate the mass of the product you should obtain. Determine the % yield of the reaction % yield = measured/calculated x 100%

Questions What is the balanced chemical equation for the reaction we studied? Which of the products is the solid? How do you know? Which of the products was the limiting reactant? Which of the products was left over? Use evidence from the lab to justify your answer. What was the % yield of the reaction? What should the % yield of the reaction been? Where did the difference go? What evidence do you have to support this? Write the Complete ionic and Net Ionic equation for the reaction we are studying. What modifications can be made to this lab to improve the percent yield?
