Presentation transcript:

The Gospel for the Christian: The Life of Grace and Faith John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.

Why is it important for us to know how to recover from sins? 1. Because we do sin 2. God wants to have fellowship with us, Rev 3:20 3. The only way we can actively enjoy God’s power in our lives is when we are in fellowship 4. We can only mature in Christ when we are filled with the Holy Spirit 5. The only way we can ever fulfill the New Commandment, and love as Christ loves is in the Filling of the Holy Spirit

Paul’s Prayer for our Spiritual Love: Ephesians 3:14-19 v 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man; v 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, v 19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.

Ephesians 4:19 Description of the Love of God: 1. It has breadth: God's love is so broad that it is extended to the whole world 2. It has length: God's love is long; it is longer than even the history of creation 3. It has height: God's love is higher than even the highest thoughts or positions of man The highest point of God's love was the Cross 4. It has depth: God's love goes deeper than what we might even be able to comprehend

Seven Descriptions of God’s Love: 1. God’s Love is Giving 2. Sacrificial 3. Unconditional 4. Eternal 5. Pure 6. Comforting 7. Life-Changing

John 15:17 This I command you, that you love one another John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another John 15:12 This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you John 15:17 This I command you, that you love one another

Three things that can be said of Spiritual Love that we can reflect: 1. It is spontaneous: That is, there is nothing that merits it 2. It is self-giving: It is not interested in what it can gain but what it can give 3. It is active: It is not a mere attitude of the heart. It is seeks, it pursues, it expresses itself in words and in deeds

Three Verses Describe the Uniqueness of Spiritual Love: I John 4:19 We love, because He first loved us II Peter 1:4 That . . . you might become partakers of the divine nature Romans 5:5 The love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us

Two parts to having this love of God in us and reflected from us . . . I John 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Two parts to having this love of God in us and reflected from us . . . That you are born of God and that you know God

What is Involved in this love? 1. It is a love for God Himself (I Corinthians 16:22) 2. A love for fellow believers (I John 3:14) 3. Love for truth and righteousness (Romans 6:17-18) 4. A love for the Word of God (Psalms 1:2) 5. And even a love for one’s enemies (Matthew 5:44)

II Corinthians 13:5 Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! 1. Do we love God and is that love growing? 2. Do we love God more now than we did in the past? 3. Are we increasing in our love for God’s Word? 4. Do we have a love expressed in mercy, patience, kindness to other believers? 5. Do we love the unbeliever enough that we want to see all men saved? 6. Are we coming to a point of love where we can even love our enemies and those who hate us?

Romans 11:33-36 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! For who has know the mind of the Lord, or who has become His counselor (reflects the questions God asked of Job)? Who has first given to Him that it might be paid back to Him again? For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen.
