Components of the LBUSD Principal Supervisor PLC Principal Supervisor Lab Days Collaboration & Planning (Monthly Meetings) Unified supervision approach and systems development Problem solving and sharing to improve craft and system approach Executive Coaching - skills/disposition Instructional Leadership Coaching - in support of Principals in their teaching and learning goal attainment Professional learning alongside Curriculum Leaders Jill

Journey of the LBUSD Lab Day Pre-PLC -Blended Coach training and/or certification for all Principal Supervisors -Principal Supervisors as effective Principals prior to role of Principal Supervisor -High variation of practice across levels -Not anchored in an identified system -Internally developed Principal Evaluation System PLC Year 1 -K-12 Principal Supervisor PLC initiated -Learning “in a classroom” -Building a systematic coaching based approach to supervision and evaluation -Implementation of Principal Evaluation System PLC Year 2 -Connection to Collaborative Inquiry Visit Process -Consultant Facilitator -Principal “front and center” -Problem of Practice -Live Coaching Session - “Safe” school selection -QIT refined Lab Day PLC Year 3 -Intentional focus on specific Domains of Principal practice -Focus on Principal Supervisor Skill Development -Intensified Blended Coaching practice -Follow-up Coaching Session w/ Principal -Principal Supervisor reflection & commitment - “Bold” School selection Jill

The LBUSD Lab Day Context Focused Learning Principal Performance Domains: Teaching & Learning; Strategy & Planning; Supervision, Evaluation and Employee Development What are the needs within this school and how might I [Principal Supervisor] increase my ability to support this school? Authentic, Job Embedded Practice Live coaching and feedback Practice for bi-monthly site visits Continuous Improvement Finding solutions together - central office issues and school support needs Developing “systemness” across Principal Supervisors Jill

Lab Day: Case Study & Problem-Solving Peer group and support staff collaboration to increase effectiveness of support to an individual or group of Principals -Case study of individual Principal through the year Example: Support for a Year 3 Principal who is struggling -Collaborating on an issue among Principals that has surfaced Example: Principals lack of knowledge in Mathematical Teaching Practices Kelly

Lab Day: Principal Supervisor Leadership & Coaching Practice Opening presentation Demonstration of connectedness to school and principal through development of the Principal Supervisor’s problem of practice Principal Supervisor shares Principal’s summary Coaching Practice Strategic practice of coaching through classroom observations and “in the moment feedback” as a model for what coaching looks like during bi-monthly site visits Host Principal Supervisor engages with the Host Principal, while all other Principal Supervisors participate in coaching practice with one another Kelly

Lab Day: Debrief & Reflection Practices Principal Supervisor group expertise - “The answer is in the room.” Host Principal Supervisor as active listener All Principal Supervisors offer potential next steps to Host Principal Supervisor and name the schools in their supervision cohort that are similar to the host school All Principal Supervisors make a follow-up commitment related to their own professional learning Kelly

LBUSD Lessons Learned All components of Lab Day should focus on Principal Supervisors’ skill development and the building of “systemness” across Principal Supervisors (e.g. norming, calibration) All Principal Supervisors should be challenged to fully engage in the Lab Day through intentionally designed components (e.g. individual reflection, contribution to problem-solving) The Lab Day should represent a space for Principal Supervisors to test their working knowledge, be vulnerable in the own development and stretch themselves as learners (e.g. peer to peer feedback) Kelly

Considering Impact of Efforts Principal Performance VAL-ED data Principals’ summative evaluation data Principal Supervisor 360 Survey Pilot survey data trends Jill

LBUSD Next Steps Implementation of the Principal Supervisor Evaluation System Framework and system tools Lab Day QIT to review input from all Principal Supervisors for refinement of Lab Day in 2017-2018 Use Principal Supervisor survey data and observational data to differentiate support and plan for professional development Formalize the process for peer coaching and observations Continued focus on development of leadership disposition through internal and external structures (e.g. executive coaching) Jill

Prince George’s County Lab Day-Purpose Provide principal supervisors and principal coaches with an authentic opportunity to reflect on their work; Calibrate and enhance their coaching skills in service to principals; and Contribute to a consistent approach to principal supervision across the district.

Prince George’s County Lab Day –Components Opening School Walkthrough and Coaching Practice Debrief Professional Development The purpose of the opening session is to provoke principal supervisors and principal coaches to consider a principal with similar strengths/challenges who he/she works with to have in mind during the Lab Day. The opening ends with a focus question for the classroom visit. Participants will gain a greater understanding of the Area Office and school’s data journey. The purpose of this component of the Lab Day is for principal supervisors to practice coaching a principal following each classroom visit. Throughout the visits the visitors are expected to raise questions as well as notice patterns in teaching and learning The purpose of this component is to assist the host principal supervisor in considering how to best support the host school and to consider other schools in the district that are in need of the same support. To contribute to a consistent approach to principal supervision across the district.
