Legal Professions in England and Wales Second-Year Law – Class 13

In a nutshell Solicitors Barristers Judges Primary litigators (deal with the first stages of a legal case) Qualifying law degree; Legal Practice Course; training contract Barristers Specialist legal advice and courtroom advocacy Qualifying law degree; vocational course in an Inn of Court; pupillage Judges 5 to 10 years as solicitor or barrister  JAC (independent commission) Regular training and assessments

The Legal Services Act 2007 Alternative Business Structures were created. A non-lawyer is the manager of the firm or has an ownership-type interest; at least 10% of the firm is controlled by non-lawyers. A positive change? A larger range of services (solicitors, accountants, etc): “one-stop shop” Ethical concerns Almost 600 ABS British Telecom, supermarkets, a Law School, trade unions, etc.

Sentence Completion Whereas solicitors complete a two-year training contract in order to qualify, barristers must complete a one-year pupillage in chambers. In order to qualify as a barrister, students must hold an LLB, complete one year of vocational training in a law school and spend a year working as an apprentice in chambers. If a barrister wishes to become a member of Queen’s Counsel, he must have at least ten years of experience working in the legal profession. Judges are appointed by the Judicial Appointments Commission, and are generally solicitors and barristers with at least five to ten years of experience.

When you call the London office of Allen and Overy, the receptionist often asks “to WHOM am I speaking?” The Judicial Appointments Committee is an organization THAT receives applications from lawyers WHO wish to become judges.
