Ladder Method 1 2 3 KILO 1000 Units HECTO 100 Units DEKA 10 Units DECI 0.1 Unit Meters Liters Grams CENTI 0.01 Unit MILLI 0.001 Unit How do you use the “ladder” method? 1st – Determine your starting point. 2nd – Count the “jumps” to your ending point. 3rd – Move the decimal the same number of jumps in the same direction. 4 km = _________ m Starting Point Ending Point How many jumps does it take? 4. 1 __. 2 __. 3 __. = 4000 m

BASIC UNITS (page 29) OF THE METRIC SYSTEM The meter (m) is the base unit of length. The gram (g) is the base unit of mass. The liter (L) is the base unit of volume.(L)

Prefixes Prefix Meaning in words numbers Kilo k Thousand 1,000 Hecto h Symbol Meaning in words Meaning in numbers Kilo k Thousand 1,000 Hecto h Hundreds 100 Deka da Tens 10 Deci d Tenths .1 Centi c Hundredths .01 Milli m Thousandths .001

Converting Units To convert from one unit to another is like following directions on a map. Which way? Left or Right?

Going Left??? When going from a smaller unit to a larger unit, you move Left on the map and the decimal moves to the LEFT .

Going Right??? When going from a larger unit to a smaller unit, you move RIGHT on the map and the decimal moves to the RIGHT .

Practice Time 4.5 m = ? cm

. . . 4.5 What to do first in the problem 4.5 m = __ cm ? Start at Meters and move to the Right to Centimeters. Decimal place moves to the RIGHT two spaces. . . . Kilo Hecto Deka Basic Unit Deci Centi Milli 4.5

As you move the decimal you will need to add zeros. . 4 . 5 0

Is this your Final Answer? 4.5 m = 450 cm

Let’s do another one! 6.6 liters = _____ mL

. . . . 6.6 What to do first in the problem 6.6 L = __ mL ? Start at Liters and move to the Right to Millileters. Decimal place moves to the RIGHT three spaces. . . . . Kilo Hecto Deka Basic Unit Deci Centi Milli 6.6

Check your answer! 6.6 liters = 6,600 mL

Let’s Go the Other Way! 3,580 mm = _______ m?

. . . . 3 5 8 0 Let’s move to the left this time. 3,580mm = ___________m? Start at Millimeters and move to the Left to Meters. Decimal place moves to the LEFT three spaces. . . . . Kilo Hecto Deka Basic Unit Deci Centi Milli 3 5 8 0

Check your answer: 3,580mm = 3.58m

Quiz Time 28 cm = ? mm 438 cm = ? m 72 g = ? mg 202 g = ? Kg 2L = ? mL

How did We do?? 1. 28 cm = 280 mm 2. 438 cm = 4.38 m 3. 72 g = 72,000 mg 4. 202 g = 0.202 kg 5. 2 L = 2,000 mL

T. Trimpe 2008 http://sciencespot.net/ Lesson 2: Mass T. Trimpe 2008 http://sciencespot.net/

English vs. Metric Units 1 pound = 453.6 grams Which is larger? 1. 1 Pound or 100 Grams 2. 1 Kilogram or 1 Pound 3. 1 Ounce or 1000 Milligrams 1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds 1 ounce of gold = 28,349.5 milligrams

Metric Units kg g cg mg Kilogram Prototype Mass refers to the amount of matter in an object. The base unit of mass in the metric system is the gram and is represented by g. Standard: 1 kilogram is equal to the mass of the International Prototype Kilogram (IPK), a platinum-iridium cylinder kept by the BIPM at Sèvres, France. Metric Units 1 Kilogram (kg) = 1000 Grams (g) 1 Gram (g) = 1000 Milligrams (mg) Click the image to watch a short video about mass. Which is larger? A. 1 kilogram or 1500 grams B. 1200 milligrams or 1 gram C. 12 milligrams or 12 kilograms D. 4 kilograms or 4500 grams Kilogram Prototype Image - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilogram

_______ + ______ + _______ = ________ g Measuring Mass We will be using triple-beam balances to find the mass of various objects. The objects are placed on the scale and then you move the weights on the beams until you get the lines on the right-side of the scale to match up. Once you have balanced the scale, you add up the amounts on each beam to find the total mass. What would be the mass of the object measured in the picture? _______ + ______ + _______ = ________ g Top Image: http://www.southwestscales.com/Ohaus_Triple_Beam_750-SO.jpg Bottom Image: http://www.regentsprep.org/Regents/biology/units/laboratory/graphics/triplebeambalance.jpg

Measuring Mass – Triple-Beam Balance 1st – Place the film canister on the scale. 2nd – Slide the large weight to the right until the arm drops below the line. Move the rider back one groove. Make sure it “locks” into place. 3rd – Repeat this process with the top weight. When the arm moves below the line, back it up one groove. 4th – Slide the small weight on the front beam until the lines match up. 5th – Add the amounts on each beam to find the total mass to the nearest tenth of a gram.
