Synthetic Division and the Remainder Theorem Section 4.3 Day 2 Synthetic Division and the Remainder Theorem

Synthetic Division There is a shortcut for dividing polynomials by binomials of the form x – k. Synthetic Division is only possible if the divisor is in the form x – k, where k is any constant.

Example 1 Divide −x 3 + 4x 2 + 9 by x − 3.

Divide using synthetic division:

Divide:

Remainder Theorem

Example 4 Use synthetic division to evaluate f (x ) = 5x 3 − x 2 + 13x + 29 when x = −4.
