Review: Natural Gas Hazards “Simple asphyxiant” Suffocates, not poisonous Explosive Can easily ignite Why you don’t turn gas back on by yourself CERT Basic Training Unit 2: Fire Safety and Utility Controls

In Depth: Natural Gas Shutoff “Why can’t I turn the gas back on myself?” The valve can break if turned the wrong way Electronic shutoff: Gas company enables Gas appliances need to be off first Can damage the diaphragm (>60psi- ¼psi) Air in pipes s/b safely vented first Pilot lights may need to be re-lit before use “Call the pros or call the news” CERT Basic Training Unit 2: Fire Safety and Utility Controls

Fire Suppression Safety (p. 2-27) Feel closed doors with back of hand Confine the fire Stay low to the ground Maintain a safe distance Never turn your back on a fire when backing out Overhaul the fire 1:40 CERT Basic Training Unit 2: Fire Safety and Utility Controls

(Who can remember all nine?) Review: CERT Sizeup Nine CERT Sizeup Steps (Who can remember all nine?) 1:50 CERT Basic Training Unit 2: Fire Safety and Utility Controls

Unit 2: Fire Safety and Utility Controls Review: CERT Sizeup Nine CERT Sizeup Steps Gather facts. Assess and communicate the damage. Consider probabilities. Assess your own situation. Establish priorities. Make decisions. Develop a plan of action. Take action. Evaluate progress. CERT Basic Training Unit 2: Fire Safety and Utility Controls

CERT Sizeup (simplified) Facts (Gather facts) Anticipate (Consider facts, guess future) Plan (“Direction before velocity”) Act (Less talking, more doing) Review (Continuously re-evaluate) CERT Basic Training: Orem/Provo Extra Unit 2: Fire Safety and Utility Controls

CERT Sizeup (simplified) Facts (Gather the facts of the situation) Events & environment: What has happened, and what is the current situation? People: How many people are affected, and how many can help? Property: What is damaged and how severely? Yourself: Are you in immediate danger? Do you have the training and equipment that you need? CERT Basic Training: Orem/Provo Extra Unit 2: Fire Safety and Utility Controls

CERT Sizeup (simplified) Anticipate (Consider the facts you’ve gathered) Events & environment: What could happen in the near future? People: How many more people could be affected? How many can help? Property: What more could be damaged? Yourself: Will food and other supplies last? How long will you be able to help? CERT Basic Training: Orem/Provo Extra Unit 2: Fire Safety and Utility Controls

CERT Sizeup (simplified) Plan (Direction before velocity) Establish priorities. Are lives at risk, and can you help? (Life safety=#1 priority) Define objectives. Base your objectives on the answers to the previous steps and aligned with the priorities you established. Make an action plan. The plan must meet your objectives while maintaining priorities and safety. Simple plans verbal, more complex plans written or diagramed. Maps are especially useful.

CERT Sizeup (simplified) Act (Less talking, more doing) Communicate the plan to the team. Execute the plan. Document any deviations and status changes so that you can report accurately to first responders. CERT Basic Training: Orem/Provo Extra Unit 2: Fire Safety and Utility Controls

CERT Sizeup (simplified) Review (Continuously) At intervals, evaluate your progress in accomplishing the plan’s objectives. What is working? What is not? What changes should immediately be made to make to stabilize the situation?

Sizeup Special: CERT Fire Sizeup Helps responders decide: Whether to attempt to suppress a fire A plan of action Answers these questions: Do my buddy and I have the right equipment? Are there other hazards? Is the building structurally damaged? Can my buddy and I escape? Can my buddy and I fight the fire safely? Remember: The safety of individual CERT members is always the top priority CERT Basic Training Unit 2: Fire Safety and Utility Controls

Unit 2: Fire Safety and Utility Controls BREAK TIME! CERT Basic Training Unit 2: Fire Safety and Utility Controls
