Chapter 13 Review By Sophie Black

Summary Edward demands that Miles help him undress and takes his bed for the third night in a row. Miles takes pity on Edward’s insanity and goes out to buy the boy some new clothes, even though Miles doesn’t have much money. He buys clothes with holes in them, planning to stitch them up. Miles returns to find Edward gone and discovers through a bumbling servant that a young man accompanied by a “ruffian” came to get the boy, claiming that Miles had sent them to get Edward. Miles realizes it is Canty, who claims Edward is his son Tom.

The Tabard in Southwark, where Miles plans to take Edward, is most famous for being the meeting place of the pilgrims in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. Historical Note

Question One Why does Miles think bigger stitches are better? Where in our culture do we think “bigger is better”? In Our Culture, The Term ‘Bigger is Better’ is widely known and followed, most famously in America. For example, look at food sizes. Rarely an American restaurant will have the biggest meal normal sized. There is Jumbo, Extra-Jumbo, and Supersized! All of This Leads to a huge population of America being Obese, and major health Issues.

Question Two Why is Canty so determined to get “Tom” back? Tom is another beggar to bring money to the table, and that is only what Canty sees in “Tom”, not the fact that “Tom” is his son.

Athwart From side to side, Crosswise. “Thou will sleep Athwart the door, and guard it.“ (Page 48)

Betwixt Between. “…For the two or three days betwixt this…“ (Page 49)

Plebeian Poor, Not very well made. “…To look mightly paltry and plebian (Page 49)…“

Trussed Close “…But straightaway trussed in rags and went with the youth…“ (Page 50)

Cozened Tricked, Pranked “…A fool and eaisly cozened, hang all thy breed!“
