Jesus’ Invitations Peter’s Restoration Come and Dine John 21:9-17 Jesus’ Invitations Peter’s Restoration

Come and Dine John 21:9-17 Jesus’ Invitations Come and See – John 1:39 This is more than an invitation to see where Jesus lived. This is an invitation to come for salvation – Psalm 34:8.

Psalm 34:8 (NIV) 8  Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.

Come and Dine John 21:9-17 Jesus’ Invitations Come and See – John 1:39 This is more than an invitation to see where Jesus lived. This is an invitation to come for salvation – Psalm 34:8. This is directed to everyone. Jesus comes to all on their own level.

Come and Dine John 21:9-17 Jesus’ Invitations Come and Learn – Matthew 11:28-29

Matthew 11:28-29 (ESV) 28  Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Come and Dine John 21:9-17 Jesus’ Invitations Come and Learn – Matthew 11:28-29 A description of our need A given rest corresponding to Justification A found rest corresponding to Sanctification An invitation to learn Some had rejected, but some had believed – Matthew 11:25-27.

Matthew 11:25-27 (ESV) 25  At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26  yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27  All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

Learning from God is not the same as learning from man – 1 Corinthians 1:27.

1 Corinthians 1:27 (ESV) 27  But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong;

Come and Dine John 21:9-17 Jesus’ Invitations Come and Rest – Mark 6:31

Mark 6:31 (ESV) 31  And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.

Come and Dine John 21:9-17 Jesus’ Invitations Come and Rest – Mark 6:31 God is always sovereign and in control. He is in total control of Salvation. We are only a conduit. (Testifying only) So let go and let Him do it. This should motivate us to share the Gospel and not to get lazy. Work with all your might and then rest in God.

Come and Dine John 21:9-17 Jesus’ Invitations Come and Eat – John 21:12 God is aware of our physical needs and provides for them – Philippians 4:19.

Philippians 4:19 (ESV) 19  And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Come and Dine John 21:9-17 Jesus’ Invitations Come and Eat – John 21:12 God is aware of our physical needs and provides for them – Philippians 4:19. Eating in the Bible always suggests fellowship. Koinonia is translated two ways – “fellowship” and “communion.” This is with others but, most importantly, with God, and the two are connected.

Come and Dine John 21:9-17 Jesus’ Invitations Come and Inherit – Matthew 25:34-40

Matthew 25:34-40 (ESV) 34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

Come and Dine John 21:9-17 Jesus’ Invitations Come and Inherit – Matthew 25:34-40 2 Timothy 1:12

2 Timothy 1:12 (ESV) 12  which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me.

Come and Dine John 21:9-17 Jesus’ Invitations Come and Inherit – Matthew 25:34-40 2 Timothy 1:12 Matthew 6:19

Matthew 6:19 (ESV) 19  “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.”

Come and Dine John 21:9-17 Peter’s Restoration Peter had been overly confident in his own ability. He was centered on his abilities and not Jesus’ instructions. Therefore, he failed. “I do not know the man.” “I do not know what you are talking about.” “I am not His disciple.”

Come and Dine John 21:9-17 Peter’s Restoration Jesus asks a question. Jesus uses Peter’s old name – Simon. The word for love becomes important in this interchange. (Agapao versus Phileo) The question is repeated three times.

Come and Dine John 21:9-17 Peter’s Restoration Peter’s responses to Jesus Peter does not use Jesus’ word for love. Peter appeals to Jesus’ knowledge of himself. God knows the worst in us and still loves us. God also knows the best in us.

Come and Dine John 21:9-17 Peter’s Restoration Jesus gives a gracious command. “Feed my sheep.” Jesus restores Peter and puts him back in a responsible position. When we fail, we must repent, be restored, and then get back in service for the Lord.

Come and Dine John 21:9-17 Application Are you in fellowship and communion with your Lord daily? Are you using past failures and sins as an excuse not to serve your Lord? How is your loving and serving?
