Housing and Interiors I Objective 4.02 Floor Covering Housing and Interiors I Objective 4.02

Generally the most expensive background treatment in a living room design is the floor.

Soft Floor Coverings When we think of soft floor coverings we think of CARPET and RUGS. To extend the life and increase the resilience of rugs and carpets add PADDING. Most carpets today are made of NYLON

WOOD FLOORS Wood floors are a favorite. Hardwoods can be scratched and dented. Hardwoods are usually more expensive than softwoods. Oak is the most common. Today there are less expensive alternatives to “real” wood floors. There are engineered wood and laminate floors made to look like wood floors.

Bamboo Flooring A natural plant material like wood, but is much more renewable than wood. Can scratch easily Cost about the same as hardwood floors.

RESILIENT FLOOR COVERINGS They are floor treatments that are generally nonabsorbent, durable, easy to maintain, and fairly inexpensive. They provide some cushioning for walking comfort and noise control. They include Vinyl Laminate Cork Tile

VINYL FLOOR COVERING Solid vinyl floor coverings are growing in popularity. They are a better quality than sheet vinyl which only has a vinyl top layer.

LAMINATE FLOOR COVERING Laminate is a product made by uniting one or more different decorative layers to a sturdy core. The best laminate floors have four layers of materials that are fused under intense heat and pressure. The final product is resistant to stains and fading and is easy to clean.

Cork Flooring Durable and eco-friendly material that is competitively priced with other types of flooring that is available in the market. All cork flooring comes pre-sealed from the manufacturer making it able to with stand water spills

TILE Tile is a flat piece of fired clay or natural stone that is available in a wide range of sizes, colors, finishes, and patterns. Tile feels cool to the touch and is therefore more popular in warm climates than in cooler climates. Read each of the forms of tile on p. 311-312 and take notes as you read.

Assignment: Complete “Creating Interior Backgrounds” by drawing pictures of appropriate floor treatments for each situation. Next complete Construction Methods for Carpets and Rugs using your textbook.
