Budget 2017 Strengthening Cultural and Recreational Infrastructure Canada Cultural Spaces Fund: commitment of $300 million over 10 years, to bring artists, cultural entrepreneurs, and organizations together in shared spaces for collaboration. To date, this Fund has invested $410 million in 1,381 projects in every province and territory, e.g. the Kenojuak Cultural Centre in Cape Dorset, Nunavut received a $4.5 million grant, to create an elder gathering space and a home for artists’ studios and exhibition gatherings.
Budget 2017: Taking critical steps to preserve, revitalize and enhance Indigenous languages and cultures, as part of ongoing work toward reconciliation. Commitment to create Indigenous Languages Act in partnership with Indigenous Peoples $69 million to enhance the Aboriginal Languages Initiatives $14.9 million for the Library and Archives Canada to support digitization of existing Indigenous languages and cultural materials, and development of Aboriginal Oral Testimonies Project $6 million to the National Research Council Canada – preserves oral histories by converting speech to text
