1.1 Evaluate Expressions

Let’s assume x = ∎ and y = Δ. How would we draw a picture of 2x + 5x? How would we draw a picture of 3x + 2y? How would we draw a picture of 2x2 + 5y?

What is the value of 3x + 2y? _____ Let’s assume x = ∎ and y = Δ. Now with your partner roll the die twice to determine values for x and y. x = ____ y = ____  What is the value of 2x + 5x? _____ What is the value of 3x + 2y? _____ What is the value of 2x2 + 5y? _____

Let’s think about the expression 4x + y2 Let’s think about the expression 4x + y2. Which of the vocabulary terms could we use to describe the expression above? Variable Power Expression Base Coefficient Exponent

Let’s think about the expression 4x + y2. Variable – A letter used to represent one or more numbers

Let’s think about the expression 4x + y2. Expression – Numbers, variables, and operations; an algebraic phrase

Let’s think about the expression 4x + y2. Coefficient – A number placed before, and being multiplied by, the variable(s)

Let’s think about the expression 4x + y2. Power – An expression that represents repeated multiplication of the same factor

Let’s think about the expression 4x + y2. Base – In a power, the factor being multiplied by itself

Let’s think about the expression 4x + y2. Exponent – In a power, the number of times the base is used as a factor

(Hint: it’s not that kind of Volume!)

Volume Activity: Take 5 minutes to use the Scotch tape, scissors, and graph paper to construct a prism (3D rectangular object) with the Volume indicated on your index card. Identify the Length, Width, and Height of your object. Write an algebraic expression using Length, Width, and Height that represents the Volume of your object.
