Longfield Primary School Phonics Workshop

What is phonics? The sound that the letter or letters make. With this basic knowledge children begin to blend simple words, then as they progress through school, more complex ones

Can you work out these words using phonics? Juraf Porij Fonix

How do we teach phonics in school? Letters & Sounds There are 6 phases. Phase 1 Develops the importance of developing reading and listening skills. Phase 2 Marks the beginning of systematic high quality phonic work. Phase 3-6 Continues to build on skills and knowledge acquired in phase 2.

Jolly Phonics A scheme that helps children to learn the sounds by using actions. Phonics Bug. A computer program used throughout the school.

Easy as a ,b, c, ...... Hear the sound. http://www.focusonphonics.co.uk/sound.htm 2. Say the sound. We teach the sounds along with the action from Jolly Phonics http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Djz82FBYiug&safe=active

We will be doing lots of sound talk in class. Try it with your child- can they follow your instructions?

We do lots of blending words

Sound Buttons.

44 different sounds! However…… The English alphabet has 26 letters but there are 44 different sounds!

cat kitten back chemist marquee plaque

ie =pie Y = fly i= blind i_ e = bike For example the sound ‘igh’ is also made from these letters ie =pie Y = fly i= blind i_ e = bike

Children will need to know these sounds so they can hear them in the words and then use them when reading and writing independently.

Pseudo words

Ways to help at home Play I spy but sound out the word. Use magnetic letters for your fridge and use them to make words together. Practise breaking/segmenting words.

Tricky words… Set a timer. Hunt the word. Play pairs.

Thank you for coming today. We would appreciate it if you would take a few moments to evaluate the phonic workshop.
