What is a Clinical Psychologist? Clinical Psychologists work to reduce psychological distress and to enhance and promote psychological well-being. A Scientist-Practitioner.

What do Clinical Psychologists do? We work with a range of psychological difficulties. A few examples: Anxiety Depression Severe and enduring mental illness (psychoses) Psychological trauma (PTSD) Psychological effects of medical conditions Relationship difficulties Behaviour problems Dementia Acquired brain injury

What do Clinical Psychologists do? Psychological Assessment Psychological Formulation Psychological Intervention Therapeutic Interventions: 1.1 Group Systemic considerations

Core Competencies of a Clinical Psychologist Supervision Teaching and training Consultation Research and audit Service development Report writing (e.g. medico-legal) Scientist Practitioner within Healthcare settings Personal, professional and leadership skills Reflective Practitioner Holistic and eclectic thinking (non-manualised, flexible approach)

Who do we work for and where? Mostly NHS but some people work privately. Hospitals, Health centres, Community teams and outreach services Often work as part of a multi disciplinary team.

DClinPsy Programme Venues: Pay and Employment: Bangor University Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board North East Wales North West Wales Conwy and Denbighshire North Powys Pay and Employment: Trainees are NHS Employees Salaries per April 1st 2010 Trainee Salary A4C Band 6 (£25,472- £34,189) Newly Qualified Salary Band 7 (£30,460- £40,157) Experienced psychologists Band 8-9 (£38,851- £97,478)

DClinPsy Programme Three Years Full-time Training in: Clinical skills Clinical academic work Clinical research Equips trainees to work in NHS as Chartered Clinical Psychologists Registered with the Health Professionals Council

DClinPsy Programme Doctoral Training Programmes 3 Year Course Year 1 & 2 = Core training 6 months - Adult Mental Health 6 months - Older adult 6 months - Learning Disabilities 6 months - Children and Adolescents Year 3 – Choose 1 or 2 placements Doctoral level research and dissertation also required. Different courses operate slightly differently.
