2.3 Problem Solving Using Inequalities translate word phrases into algebraic expressions and word sentences into inequalities solve word problems by using an inequality in one variable

Example 1: What’s Your Profit? A store is charged $5.50 each for calculators and a delivery charge of $25 for the order. If the store sells the calculators for $8 each, how many calculators must be ordered and sold to produce a profit of at least $80?

Example 2: Shares of stock The Perez family has 100 more shares of stock B than of stock A. The current price per share of stock A is $18.50 and of stock B is $24.75. At most how many shares of each do they have if the average price per share is greater than $22?

Example 3: Congruence A regular hexagon, a square and an equilateral triangle all have equal sides. If the sum of the perimeters of the square and the triangle is no more than 18 cm less than twice the perimeter of the hexagon, what is the minimum length of each side?

Example 4: Consecutive even integers Find all the sets of five consecutive even integers whose sum is between 225 and 250.

Example 5 The lengths of the legs of an isosceles triangle are integers. The base is half as long as each leg. What are the possible lengths of the legs if the perimeter is between 6 and 16 units?
