The y-component of Newton’s second law is Because the tension vector points straight up, Ty = T. Because the weight vector points straight down, wy =  w. This is where the signs enter. With these components, Newton’s second law becomes T  w = 0 This equation is easily solved for the tension in the rope: T = w = 500 N assess For two forces to cancel, they have to be equal and opposite – exactly what we found. © 2015 Pearson Education, Inc.

Because we are pulling at an angle, however, part of the tension in the rope pulls up on the car instead of in the forward direction.
