Presentation transcript:

Democritus Date of Discovery or introduction of ideas: Circa 460 BCE- circa 370 BCE What was their idea: Came up with the idea that everything is made up of smaller indivisible structures. Also said that combinations of 4 basic “elements” create every substance on our planet. Picture of the Scientist: Picture or formula of their work: Air Fire Earth Water

John Dalton Date of Discovery or introduction of ideas: 1803 What was their idea: The identifying and naming of elements with symbols to represent them. Picture of the Scientist: Picture or formula of their work:

JJ Thompson Date of Discovery or introduction of ideas: 1906 What was their idea: Thompson came up with the idea that the atom has both positive and negative parts. He did not understand exactly how the were situated by one another. Picture of the Scientist: Picture or formula of their work:

Ernest Rutherford Date of Discovery or introduction of ideas: 1917 What was their idea: He came up with the idea that there is space between the nucleus of an atom and the electrons by doing a gold foil experiment. Picture of the Scientist: Picture or formula of their work:

HGJ Moseley Date of Discovery or introduction of ideas: 1913 What was their idea: He came up with the idea of the atomic number representing the elements protons and electrons. This helped redesign Mendeleev’s Periodic Table. He is also responsible for the discovery of the X-Ray. Picture of the Scientist: Picture or formula of their work:

Niels Bohr Date of Discovery or introduction of ideas: 1912 What was their idea: He designed a model of the atom that we still use today. It is sometimes called the planetary model. (Because it looks like the solar system.) Picture of the Scientist: Picture or formula of their work:

Louis deBroglie Picture or formula of their work: 1924 What was their idea: Developed a 3-Dimentional model of the atom . Considered the best modern model in chemistry today. The model is called the cloud model. Picture of the Scientist: Picture or formula of their work:

Demetri Mendeleev Date of Discovery or introduction of ideas: 1860’s What was their idea: He developed the first periodic table of elements. He used only 62 elements, but realized that there were more. He organized it by atomic mass. Picture of the Scientist: Picture or formula of their work:

Marie Curie Date of Discovery or introduction of ideas: 1911 What was their idea: Discovered the medical uses of radioactive materials and the idea of radioactivity. Picture of the Scientist: Picture or formula of their work:

Enrico Fermi Date of Discovery or introduction of ideas: 1939-42 What was their idea: Designed an built the first atomic weapon that helped end WWII. The bombs were dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, Japan and caused massive destruction to those areas. Picture of the Scientist: Picture or formula of their work:
