Junior Achievement hopes you had an awesome day at JA BizTown! Let’s talk about your experience! 1

What did you like about your job? What challenges did you face? What was your job? What did you like about your job? What challenges did you face? How do you think adults have similar experiences at work? 2

How many times did you get paid? (2) How many times did you get paid? Did you take your paychecks to the bank? (Only the first paycheck.) What did you have to do to your paycheck? (Endorse it.) 3

Your second paycheck was handled by direct deposit. What does that mean? (An electronic transfer of money from one account to another. If you worked for Purina, Purina ordered the bank to take money out of its bank account and put in your bank account. You didn’t have to go to the bank.) 4

What did you take to the bank when you made your deposit? (endorsed paycheck, deposit ticket, and check to First Bank to open a savings account) Did you get any cash back? ($2) Why did you get cash back? (Some businesses only accepted cash payments.) 5

What were the three ways to pay for goods and services in JA BizTown? (cash, check, and debit card) Where did you write a check? What did you buy? Where did you use a debit card? What did you buy? 6

If you wanted to buy more things with your debit card, what must you do? (deposit more money into your bank account) If you used your debit card, where would you keep track of your spending? (in your checkbook register) 7

Did anyone try buy something and couldn’t because you didn’t have enough money in your bank account? How could that happen? (didn’t keep track of all spending in checkbook register and didn’t realize how much was left) 8

What’s wrong with this deposit ticket? Brent Howard June 14 17 8 33 123 2 00 (He deposited a paycheck for $8.33, but he took $2 out in cash. So, his “net” deposit is $6.33.) 9

Is his deposit entered correctly? 6/14 6 33 +6 33 Yes! 10

Brent bought something at Purina. Did he enter his purchase correctly? deposit 6/14 6 33 +6 33 Purina 2 50 - 2 50 3 83 Yes! 11

Then he bought something at the Print Shop. Is his entry correct? deposit 6/14 6 33 +6 33 6 33 6/14 Purina 2 50 - 2 50 3 83 Print Shop 6/14 3 00 3 00 +3 00 -3 00 6 83 83 No! He should put the $3.00 under the Payment column and subtract under the balance column. His new balance would be $.83! 12

Why do people save? To buy something in the future! Did you save any money on your first break so you could spend it on your second break? Why? Wanted to buy something expensive, such as renting a cell phone. 13

What does this picture show? The circular flow of an economy! 14

What do arrows A and B show? Businesses sell good and services to customers and customers must pay for them. 15

What goods and services did you buy? What goods and services did JA BizTown businesses sell to their customers? What goods and services did you buy? 16

What do arrows C and D show? People sell resources to businesses and businesses must pay for them. 17

What are the three types of resources? What are resources? People and things businesses use to make and sell their goods and services. What are the three types of resources? human, natural, and capital 18

Give some examples of human resources in JA BizTown. All the workers. Give some examples of natural resources in JA BizTown. Strawberries used in Monsanto, egg used in St. Louis Children’s Hospital 19

Give some examples of capital resources in JA BizTown. Computers, tables, chairs, gazebo, TVs, lights, projector screen, business signs, and much more! 20

Could you buy everything you wanted to buy? Why or why not? In an economy, people can’t have everything they want. What helped you make a decision on what to buy? How do prices help make decisions? Can your family have everything that it wants? 21

Were you free to buy the things you wanted if you had enough money? Was your business free to sell the things in your business? Were you free to apply for a job you thought you wanted in JA BizTown? That’s a free enterprise economy! How are people free to do those things in the real world? 22

Why isn’t everything free in a free enterprise economy? If everything were free, everyone would want all the goods and services and there aren’t enough resources for everyone to have everything! That’s called SCARCITY! 23

If you were paid $8.00, was your paycheck written out for $8.00? No. Why? Taxes were taken out of your paycheck. Why? Our taxes paid for public goods and services provided by City Hall. 24

Name some public goods and services provided by governments and paid for by taxes. Police protection, fire protection, roads, bridges, schools, national defense, and much more! How many people voted? 25

Your business had a lot of costs. What were they? salaries for workers, advertising, health care for worker families, philanthropy, phone, electric, water, supplies …. What else? 27

took out a loan at the bank Your business didn’t have any money at the beginning of the day. How did you pay for your workers and other expenses? took out a loan at the bank 28

How did you repay the loan? When our business earned money from selling goods or services, we deposited the money at the bank to repay our loan. 29

revenue – costs = profit What is profit? revenue – costs = profit What does that mean? how much money we brought in minus how much it cost to run our business 30

Did you earn a profit? Why or why not? On a scale of 1 to 5 (where 5 is the highest), how would you rate JA BizTown? What did you like best? What did you like least? 31
