Pennsylvania Hospital Trends, 2005-2015 Ten Year Trend in Capacity, Inpatient and Outpatient Utilization, Emergency Department Use in Pennsylvania Licensed Hospitals The Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania© Updated March 2016

Pennsylvania Hospital Transformation 2005-2015 Pennsylvania hospitals and health systems have worked to insure appropriate utilization of the health care delivery system through advances in medicine, technology and market pressures for more efficient use of resources. During the past 10 years, in Pennsylvania acute care hospitals: The number of general acute care hospitals has declined 10%; and the number of licensed (acute care) beds has seen a decrease of 6.5%. Measures of inpatient utilization have declined: inpatient admissions decreased 13%; inpatient days decreased over 13%; and average lengths of stay decreased by 1%. Outpatient surgeries performed in the hospital setting have decreased by more than 4%, while surgeries performed in freestanding ASCs increased by more than 63%. Pennsylvania Hospital Transformation 2005-2015 Use of the emergency department has increased significantly as the number of emergency departments available has decreased. 2015 reflected the second highest visits per 1,000 over the ten year span. During the past 10 years, in Pennsylvania acute care hospitals: The number of emergency department visits overall (per 1,000 persons) has increased by 12%.
