HISTORY The ancient Egyptian civilisation lasted for more then 3000 years longer than any other civilisation in human history. Although we are talking about a period that began more then 5000 years ago, we know a great deal about ancient Egypt .

CLOTHING Egypt has hot and dry weather because so much of it is a desert . The ancient Egyptians had to have clothing that was not too hot and allowed free flowing air to cool their bodies.

CLEOPATRA Cleopatra is known as the best known woman in history, famed for her supposed beauty and intellect , and her love affairs with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. But, argues Mary Hamer , most of what we think we know about Cleopatra is merely the echo of Roman propaganda.

Fashion &Beauty FACTS FASHION Egyptian men and women used black or green eye paint made from ground minerals. Women also liked to rounge their cheeks and paint their lips red. FloraI garlands and jewellery, such as necklaces and rings, were popular, as were heavy black wings made from human hair.

Pyramids The most famous Egyptain pyramids are those found at Giza, on the outskirts of Cairo. Several of Giza’s pyramids are counted among the largest structures ever built. The pyramids of Khufa at Giza is the largest Egyptian pyramid. It is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still in existence.

River Nile Facts Picture of River Nile The Nile was the lifeblood of ancient Egypt It made life possible in the otherwise barren desert of Egypt It is the longest river in the world [over 4,000 miles] It was the major source of water for bathing and drinking It served as a source of food for the people of ancient Egypt The Nile was crucial for farming

Rosetta Stone The skill of reading hieroglyphics was lost until the discovery of the Rosetta stone in 1799. It contained the same texts in hieroglyph , demoic , and Greek. The Rosetta stone was discovered by Lean Frances Champollion.

Sport Football is the most popular national sport in Egypt. The Cairo Derby is one of the fiercest derbies in Africa and the BBC picked it as one of the 7 toughest events in the world. Squash and tennis are other popular sports in Egypt.

MUMMIES Mummies are dead pharaohs. The pharaohs had their brains removed from their noses. The organs would be put in special jars to protect them. The body was wrapped with linen. The mummy wore a mask. The mummies were protected by curses.

The Mummified Cat Cats were sacred to the goddess. They were mummified when they died. They were wrapped in linen bandages and the faces were painted. The cats were then put in cat shaped coffins and sold to temple visitors so they could be dedicated to the goddess.

SPHINX The Great Sphinx is the earliest known monumental sculpture in Egypt. It was carved around 4500 years ago for the Pharaoh Khafa and guarded the way to his pyramid at Giza.
