Setting Traps for the Teacher Luke 20

Jesus’ Authority Questioned The Chief Priests knew about the miracles Jesus had performed, but they refused to believe Jesus asked them about the authority of John the Baptist When they couldn’t answer Jesus’ question, He refused to answer theirs

Parable of the Vineyard The owner of the vineyard is God the Father The vineyard represents the nation of Israel The tenants are the chief priests and teachers of the law In this parable, Jesus is predicting His own death

Jesus: The Capstone Capstone: The uppermost or finishing stone of a structure; the crowning achievement or final stroke Jesus is the foundation of the Christian faith – our lives must be built on and around Him (1 Cor. 3:11, Acts 4:11)

The Spies Question Jesus When they ask Jesus about paying taxes, they think they have Him trapped Jesus tells them that we should pay what we owe, but our greatest loyalty is to God The spies were astonished at His answer, and they became speechless

The Sadducees Question Jesus The Sadducees didn’t believe in the resurrection; they were like today’s liberal preachers Jesus is NOT saying you won’t recognize your husband or wife in heaven There won’t be any additional weddings in heaven because they won’t be necessary

The Son of David The religious leaders knew the Scriptures, but they failed to recognize the Messiah Jesus is a blood descendant of King David AND the virgin-born Son of God

Jesus Gives a Warning God does not think very highly of religious hypocrites Teachers of God’s Word will be judged more strictly (Jas. 3:1) Every Christian has a God-given responsibility to share the Gospel

Luke 12:47-48 “That servant who knows his master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows…From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be required.”
