Health care careers--- 18 million health care workers in US(from CDC) Part 1

certification This is when a professional organization issues a certificate to a person who has met requirements of education/experience set by the organization This is lower level of education

registration This is when a regulatory body in a given health care field gives an exam and maintains a list of qualified personnel Texas Dept of Health has a listing of many occupations and who is expired, active, revoked, ect. Rad tech,massage, athletic trainer,optician, others.

licensure This is when a government agency authorizes individuals to work in a given occupation after passing requirements. Likely requires several hours of continuing education every year and renewal fee.

Associates degree A degree awarded by a vocational or community college after successful completion of 2 years of study

Bachelor degree This is a degree awarded by a college or university after a person has completed 4 year course of study in a given field

Masters degree A degree awarded by a college or university after completion of 1-2 more years of study after the person has received a bachelor’s degree

doctorate This is a degree awarded by a college or university after completion of a prescribed course of study beyond a bachelor’s degree or masters degree.

What are levels of dental workers? Dentist--(DDS)- doctor, exams, surgery dental Hygienist- workers under dentist, preliminary exams, cleans teeth and educates patients Dental lab tech-repairs dental prosthesis Dental assistant- preps patient for exams, chair side with dentist

Diagnostic services What are areas of diagnostic services? Electrocardiograph- ECG(maybe called EKG) use sticky electrodes to diagnose heart conditions Electroencephalograph (EEG)- records activity of the brain Medical lab tech- works with pathologist to determine cause of disease through microscopic test- might specialize in microbiology, hematology, histology ect

Medical lab assistants Works under the supervision of lab tech Performs basic lab test Prep specimens Clean and maintain equipment

phlebotomist Specialist in venipuncture- in other words sticking you with a needle to get a blood sample Collects blood for tests

Radiology tech Works under supervision of doctor given xray prescription(Davis series ect) Works with x-rays, must keep track of radiation amounts, protect patient with lead aprons. Must know correct angle and distance to get the right shot. Xray film is being replaced by computer. show cst.

Nuclear medicine tech Prep radioactive substances to administer to patients and use films, images on a screen to determine how substances pass through the body. Aka Bone scan

MRI tech Use superconductive magnets and radio waves to reveal info on body anatomy. Rad tech with more training for MRI. Most MRI is 1.5T(Telsa). Use 3T size for super resolution. MRI has no radiation but uses strong magnets. Very noisy. Don’t move. CT(computerized tomography) uses radiation with high resolution. 3D image. MRA to look at arteries.

Ultrasound tech Send sound waves into the body to record images. Gel is placed on skin to amplify ultrasound (US) waves and wand is moved over body. Ultrasound techs can look at unborn babies Used for doctors to diagnose problems in the body, such as blood flow. Can be used to breakup kidney stones or inflammation injuries(therapeutic US)
