Icebreaker Ask participants to write down what they think writing looks like in a kindergarten classroom.

Part One: Shared Writing

Think. Pair. Share. Discuss with your colleagues what you know about shared writing and any information you want to know about shared writing. Choose one person to be a recorder to write responses on the KWL chart. Choose one person to share out from your group.

Benefits of Shared Writing Moves students toward independent writing Reinforces and supports reading All students participate Encourages close examination of texts, words, and options of authors

Benefits of Shared Writing Demonstrates the conventions of writing-spelling, punctuation, and grammar Focuses on composing and leaves transcribing to the teacher Builds competence and confidence

Implementing Shared Writing Students in small or whole group Class gathered around chart paper, white board, promethean board, or chalk board Class decides on a common experience to write about Students encouraged to think before dictating Students dictate the story using familiar words Teacher writes students’ ideas

Implementing Shared Writing Teacher encourages complete sentences, corrects grammar, and makes suggestions Teacher highlights writing skills – grammar, mechanics, spelling patterns (Pre-planned) Class rereads story when complete Activity is quick paced (10 -15 minutes) Finished product is readable and error free

Practicing With Our New Themes Unit Theme 1: I’m In School Unit Theme 2: Fall Fun With Friends Unit Theme 3: Families Everywhere Unit Theme 4: Winter Around the World Unit Theme 5: Healthy Habits, Healthy Minds! Unit Theme 6: Hero’s and Helpers Unit Theme 7: On the Move! Unit Theme 8: Animals Around Us Unit Theme 10: School’s Out for Summer In small groups, participants will brain storm ideas for shared writing related to the new themes. Groups will chart ideas and share out with the larger group.

Part Two: Interactive Writing

Interactive Writing Role Play Come up with a topic related to one of our new unit themes. Choose one teacher in your group and role play a interactive writing lesson with your colleagues as your students.

THINK. PAIR. SHARE. Review Suggested Writing Activities document. Within your group discuss your thoughts about the activities for the first Unit. In the blank spaces come up with a few books and writing activities to share with the larger group.

Five Senses Take-home Book Activity from Dinah Zike’s Big Book of Books and Activities Make a foldable book on the five senses to use with your students. Five senses is a sub theme in unit one. Find directions on page 21
