Fungal culture CMV / HSV culture CSF fungal culture for Coccidioides AFB culture Molecular tests Fungal culture Bacterial culture, normally sterile site AFB culture AFB culture (approval needed) CMV/HSV culture CMV/HSV culture Molecular tests Molecular tests Molecular tests OR OR Sterile Container Sterile Black Top Tube If large Sterile Container Amies Charcoal Transport Medium Keep moist with 2-3 drops of sterile saline Anaerobic Transport Medium Universal Transport Medium If large Universal Transport Medium Sterile Black Top Tube Sterile Black Top Tube Place tissue on top of soft agar medium Keep small piece moist with 2-3 drops sterile saline Pleural, peritoneal, synovial, etc. 20 ml or more preferred Obtain from lab Obtain from lab Cotton swab with wire shaft Bacterial culture orders: Nonsterile site (mucosal tissues - GI, sinus, abscess, surgical drainage) Sterile site (normally sterile tissues and fluids) Label sample, confirm match with requisition Indicate source on tube and requisition Send immediately to laboratory Swabs not accepted for AFB or Fungal cultures
