Remember that time? When have you needed courage to introduce yourself to someone? We have a responsibility to introduce our friends to Jesus. Today we look at how some of the disciples were introduced to Him. Consider how we can do the same.

Listen for how two men came to be following after Jesus. John 1:35-39 (NIV) The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!" 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked,

Listen for how two men came to be following after Jesus. "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" 39 "Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour.

Seek a Personal Experience How did John (the Baptist) describe Jesus, and what did his declaration mean? What words indicate the two disciples of John believed his message and were sincere in wanting to know more about Jesus? What does it mean today for us to “follow” Jesus? What hinders people in our culture from following Jesus?

Seek a Personal Experience Jesus asked the men, “what do you want?” If you had been one of the two disciples, what would you have wanted to ask? John invited his followers to look at Jesus. What are some ways in which we can invite people to “look” at Jesus?

Seek a Personal Experience What kinds of responses would Jesus receive if He appeared on earth in bodily form in our day, instead of back 2000 years ago? The fact is, that He is present in the world today …  Like John did, we need to challenge people to follow Jesus  When people do follow Him … they learn about Him … they learn from Him

Listen for who pointed someone to Jesus this time. John 1:40-45 (NIV) Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said,

Listen for who pointed someone to Jesus this time. "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter). 43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, "Follow me." 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of

Listen for who pointed someone to Jesus this time. Bethsaida. 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."

Tell Others Your Personal Experience What action of Andrew testifies to the significance he placed on his personal encounter with Jesus? What important information did Philip’s witness include about Jesus? Who is the first person you remember telling you about Jesus?

Tell Others Your Personal Experience What pattern of witness do Andrew and Philip model? What often holds us back from telling others about Jesus? What can we learn from Andrew and Philip’s response to following Jesus?

Listen for skepticism. John 1:46-49 (NIV) 46 "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip. 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false."

Listen for skepticism. 48 "How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you." 49 Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."

Invite Others to Know Jesus Nathanael was at first skeptical … how do we sometimes misjudge people and as a result of our faulty conclusion miss out on great opportunities and experiences? What stereotypes about Christ prevent people today from trusting Him? Rather than argue the point or become distracted by irrelevant issues, what did Philip counsel Nathanael to do?

Invite Others to Know Jesus What are some ways we can respond when others express doubts about Jesus?  Jesus revealed Himself to Nathanael and made a profound impression on him. Nathanael realized that Jesus had knowledge, understanding, and insight beyond the normal man.

Invite Others to Know Jesus Consider Romans 11:33-12:1 (NIV) Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! … [36] For from him and through him and to him are all things … [12:1] Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship.  Jesus is qualified … to be our Savior … and to be the Lord of our lives.

Application Pray. If you’ve never talked about Jesus with someone else, begin with prayer. Who do you know who is without Christ? Pray for the person, pray for the opportunity to talk, and pray for boldness

Application Invite. Invite others to “come and see” by inviting them to join you in your Bible study group. Bible study is a great way for individuals to see what God’s Word says about Jesus.

Application Tell. Telling others about Jesus does not require a deep grounding in the Bible and theology. Telling someone about Jesus is as simple as telling how you met Him and what He has done in your life. Share with others your own encounter with Jesus and how He changed your life.
