FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Collects information about finances and other circumstances Used to determine financial eligibility for federal, state, and University aid Submit through Federal Student Aid processor File online at www.fafsa.gov (FAFSA on the Web) No charge to file! www.studentaid.ed.gov

Assets The FAFSA will ask for information regarding assets. Do not include: Value of your primary residence Retirement account values Business value if it is considered a family business with less than 100 FT employees

Upcoming Changes to the FAFSA Starting in the 2017-2018 year: FAFSA will collect previous year data

FAFSA Tips If the parent does not have a social security number, enter all 0 (zeros) and FAFSA will still be processed on behalf of the student. In the instance of a divorced/separated parent: The parent information on the FAFSA should only be the parent of record. The parent of record is the parent whom the student lives with more than 50%. Include step-parent information if the parent of record is married. In the case of a divorced/separate parent or if parents were never married and both parents remain in the same household both parent information will be required on the FAFSA

Best Practices Never rule out a college because of cost alone. Make sure that you and your student are partners when applying and reviewing aid offers. Correspondence is sent directly to the student in most cases. Compare costs before applying — Net price calculators can provide an estimate of financial aid eligibility and remaining college costs. Net price calculators should be available on every college's website. Compare awards — Look at grants, loans, and parental contributions before making a final decision on a college. Speak to the Financial Aid Office for changes in the household or other unusual financial circumstances
