Curriculum structure Six Areas of Learning and Experience: Expressive Arts Health and well-being Humanities Languages, literacy and communication Mathematics and numeracy Science and technology Three cross-curriculum responsibilities: Digital competence Literacy Numeracy

The Four Purposes The four purposes noted in Professor Donaldson’s report “Successful Futures” are at the heart of the new curriculum and are the starting point for all decisions on the content and experiences developed as part of the new curriculum and assessment arrangements.

Purposes of the curriculum The purposes of the curriculum in Wales should be that children and young people develop as:

Cross-Curriculum Responsibilities Enrichment and Experiences Strand 1 (Strategic Design) phase, consisting of the following 4 groups: Cross-Curriculum Responsibilities Enrichment and Experiences Welsh Dimension, International Perspectives and Wider Skills Assessment and Progression

Welsh dimension and international perspectives: definition The Welsh dimension provides learners with the opportunity to develop their unique identity through exploring questions of culture and belonging. It provides learners with an understanding of how modern Wales was forged and the means by which to imagine its future and their role in Wales’ unfolding story. International perspectives offer opportunities for learners to reflect on their roles and responsibilities as global citizens, and respond to the challenges of working towards a sustainable and equitable future.   Learners will experience relevant contexts that help them to explore and make connections between local and global issues. The curriculum will recognise and promote positive relationships based on mutual respect, tolerance and dignity in a diverse society.

Welsh dimension and international perspectives: definition The curriculum will inspire and enable learners to:   become knowledgeable of Wales’ diverse linguistic heritage and culture, and its connection with the wider world. explore and critically analyse contemporary matters affecting their lives in Wales and beyond. realise the positive and negative future implications of their actions and the actions of others. develop and justify their responses to local, national and global matters. model empathy, equality and active citizenship.

Welsh dimension and international perspectives: definition Self Local National Global

The six Strand 2 Areas of Learning and Experience Expressive Arts Health and Well-Being Humanities Languages, Literacy and Communication Mathematics and Numeracy and Science and Technology

Strand 2 Strand 2 – High level design of the 6 Areas of Learning Experiences, the Strand 2 groups were announced in January, and 25 new Pioneer Schools joined the network to help with the next phase of development. Welsh Government and regional Consortia are now jointly facilitating the AoLE development work, together with Estyn and Qualifications Wales. 18th January - The new Strand 2 AoLE working groups came together for the first time.

Tasks for Strand 2 To develop initial high level AoLE frameworks by June 2017. A clear statement about how the AoLE promotes the four purposes; A description of the scope and boundaries for the AoLE including its central concerns, how it is distinct from other areas and why it is important for the education of each child and young person; A decision about how best to present the various component subjects and/or strands within the AoLE Propose the level of detail to be provided to practitioners to enable them to realise the curriculum for Health and Wellbeing

Next Steps – Strand 3 From September onwards populate the Areas of Learning and Experience will begin.
