Application Style Questions

What is an application style question? A type of question which SITUATES a student into the problem being presented Relies on students ability to combine several points of knowledge Can have multiple right answers but asks for the BEST answer Heavily relies on a students ability to recongnize actions and the rationales for said actions

Why are these questions used? Is a better discriminator of how a student understands the USE of knowledge More useful for practical courses Is required to prepare students for real situations Demonstrates advanced thinking of students

Example 3. The nurse is performing a physical assessment on a newly admitted patient. An example of objective information obtained during the physical assessment includes the: A) patient’s history of allergies. B) patient’s use of medications at home. C) last menstrual period 1 month ago. D) 2 x 5 cm scar present on the right lower forearm.
