Is and Are are verbs that tell about the present.

The word IS tells about ONE person, place, or thing. The girl is sad. Use the word ‘is’ because there is ONE girl.

The word ARE tells about MORE THAN ONE person, place, or thing. The dogs are sleeping. Use the word ‘are’ because there is more than one dog.

Which is correct? The baby (is, are) eating. is Use the word ‘is’, because there is one baby.
