THE NATURAL DISASTERS IN EACH CONTINENT: DROUGHTS, FLOODS, EARTHQUAKES AND VOLCANOES

WHAT DO WE ALREADY KNOW ABOUT NATURAL DISASTERS? A natural disaster is a sudden event caused by nature as a flood, storm, or accident which causes great damage or suffering

WHAT IS A VOLCANO? Any hole in the Earth’s crust through which lava reaches the Earth’s surface. Some are cone shaped, others are broad and flat and many are located beneath the sea Any hole in the Earth’s crust through which lava reaches the Earth’s surface. Some are cone shaped, others are broad and flat and many are located beneath the sea Some are active, some are dormant and others are extinct Some are active, some are dormant and others are extinct

WHAT IS AN EARTHQUAKE? The shaking of the Earth’s crust caused by rock movement

WHAT IS A FLOOD? The flow of water over an area that is unusually dry. It may be a river flowing over flat land beside it, or the sea covering a low-lying coastal area

WHAT IS A CYCLONE? It is a very strong wind that moves very fast in a circle It is a very strong wind that moves very fast in a circle Cyclones are responsible for others meteorological phenomena such as topical cyclones and tornadoes Cyclones are responsible for others meteorological phenomena such as topical cyclones and tornadoes Hurricane and typhoon are regionally specific names for a strong tropical cyclone Hurricane and typhoon are regionally specific names for a strong tropical cyclone

WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF THESE NATURAL DISASTERS?

HOW CAN PEOPLE TRY TO MINIMISE THE EFFECTS OF THESE DISASTERS? Short term response Short term response - Doctors, nurses, firemen and army rush there. Aids agencies and the Red Cross arrive - People give money to help the survivors Long term response Long term response We try to prevent disasters, and to identify the areas at risk, so that they can warn people in time to move to a safe place

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF AID AGENCIES IN NATURAL HAZARDS? Aid agencies work in emergency situations providing relief against the natural disasters and setting up long-term projects that help communities rebuild their lives and reduce their vulnerability to future disasters and conflicts Aid agencies work in emergency situations providing relief against the natural disasters and setting up long-term projects that help communities rebuild their lives and reduce their vulnerability to future disasters and conflicts For example, Action Aid has assisted more than 380,000 people afected by the Asian tsunami or is helping in the South Asia quake where the situation remains critical and construction is still the main priority For example, Action Aid has assisted more than 380,000 people afected by the Asian tsunami or is helping in the South Asia quake where the situation remains critical and construction is still the main priority
