Overview O During the summer of 2016, the Language Arts Curriculum Guide and website were modified, in an effort to: 1. Make the Curriculum Guide more teacher-friendly and condense the current curriculum to four units 2. Align the District Curriculum to the NJ Curricular Frameworks, NJSLS, & Unit Assessments 3. Incorporate various student populations 4. Provide teachers with more resources for their instructional planning

Course Description: Workshop Model

Pacing Chart A pacing chart, which delineates the timeline for each unit and what is to take place during that 9-week timeframe has been included.

ESL Framework

Effective Pedagogical Routines/Instructional Strategies Included near the beginning of each Curriculum Guide is a list of Effective Pedagogical Routines/Instructional Strategies.

NJCCS Educational Technology Standards Specific NJCCS Educational Technology Standards are identified and featured in the content of the Curriculum Unit. You can cite these in your lesson plans.

Computer Skills Computer Skills – Basic Computer Skills & Word Processing, accordance with CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.6 have been included.

Career Ready Practice Standards Specific Career Ready Standards are identified which are featured in the content of the unit. You can cite these in your lesson plans.

WIDA Proficiency Levels The WIDA framework rubric, which recognizes the continuum of language development within the four domains (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), with six English language proficiency levels has been included. A student’s level is based upon their Access score.

Differentiated Instruction Based on the content area and grade, several activities are provided to accommodate students of varying abilities. This will ensure that all students are able to demonstrate their content knowledge and skills. You can use the activities and strategies in your lesson plans.

Interdisciplinary Connections Interdisciplinary Connections in other content areas have been provided in the units. Interdisciplinary connections offer students the ability to demonstrate and/or extend their learning in a different rigorous medium.

Enrichment For students who are more advanced or have completed an assignment early, several grade-and-subject- appropriate enrichment activities and strategies are suggested. You can include these activities in your lesson plans.

Assessments Required and suggested assessments are provided – both formative and summative. You can include these assessments in your lesson plans.

Using the Curriculum: NJSLS Description A description of the Student Learning Standard & the Modified Student Learning Standard (Essential Element of the DLM) is located here. The State Standard should be included in your lesson plans.

Using the Curriculum: Student Population Included is a breakdown of various student populations and targets for that population.

Using the Curriculum: Critical Knowledge & Skills The focus objective(s) for the day comes from the list off Critical Knowledge & Skills, which stem from the unpacked NJSLS. Using the Curriculum: Critical Knowledge, Skills, & Population Critical Knowledge & Skills have been delineated to correlate to each student population.

Using the Curriculum : Essential Questions (Accountable Talk) Organize instruction around the Essential Questions. These questions are a great tool for focusing students, beginning a lesson, summarizing learning, and initiating Accountable Talk discussion.

Using the Curriculum: Sample Activities/Lesson Starters Sample Activities/Lesson Starters are suggested ways of beginning a lesson. These activities, rooted in the standards and content, allow students to demonstrate their understanding and learning.

Using the Curriculum: District Resources SRA Imagine It! Phonics/Routine Cards Include the Routine Cards during the Imagine It! instruction. The Lesson Cards in the kits will indicate when to implement the routine cards. The Routine Cards have explicit instructions on how to incorporate the skills listed above and must be incorporated in all lessons. For our district, this resource will be used for grades K-2.

Using the Curriculum: District Resources-Guided Reading Guided reading is an small reading instructional approach designed to provide differentiated teaching that supports students in developing reading proficiency through the development of fluency and comprehension. The small group model allows children to be taught in a way that is intended to be more focused on their specific needs, accelerating their progress. For our district, this will be used in grades K-5.

Using the Curriculum: District Resources- Guided Reading This chart provides reading behaviors that students on- grade level should display by the end of the school year. This will be monitored through running records.

Using the Curriculum : Writing Resources to address the writing standards required by the NJSLS Curricular Framework are provided here. There is a primary writing focus, which in grades K-5 uses the Writer’s Workshop Units of Study. The chart contains the bends and lessons that should be covered in the unit. The secondary writing focus provides writing suggestions for the additional writing standards that must be covered. Given that writing should occur on a daily basis routine writing suggestions included and should be incorporated into the students’ daily writing experiences.

Using the Curriculum: District Resources Included is a list of required resources for a particular unit. Teachers have the liberty to add to these resources, but can not replace them.

Using the Curriculum: District Resources Text Exemplars Recommended by CCSS: Appendix B are also provided for ALL grade levels. There are recommended articles from Toolkit Texts. These short articles can be used to support literacy, content area instruction, & as models for non-fiction writing across the curriculum for grades K-5. This will be replaced with Harvey Daniels for grades 6-8. The Comprehension Club provides a list of read alouds and book clubs for grades K-2. This will be replaced with novels for grades 3-12.

Using the Curriculum: Rubric The appropriate rubric for each grade level & writing focus is included in each curriculum guide. Students should be familiar with these rubrics.

Using the Curriculum: Additional Resources/Websites Additional resources can be used, but cannot replace required resources. A list of suggested websites are also included.

Using the Curriculum: Wordly Wise Only for grades 4-8 Wordly Wise 3000 provides systematic academic vocabulary instruction in grades 4-8, developing the critical link between vocabulary and reading comprehension. It is explicit vocabulary instruction that is to be NO LONGER THAN 15 MINUTES DAILY, with each lesson lasting one full 6- day cycle.

The ELA website provides a wealth of information and resources for teachers. It is comprised of the Department of English Language Arts Core Beliefs. There are tabs that are specific to district initiatives and various grade levels.

Navigating the Language Arts Literacy Website: SRA Imagine It! & Wonderworks Clicking on the SRA Imagine It! Phonics tab will give you access to grades K-2 phonics resources, information, and spelling lists. The Wonderworks (3rd grade Foundational Skills program) tab provides teachers with a PowerPoint and Observation Tool.

Please note that Student Readers are password protected. You must use your Paterson and password to access them.

Navigating the Language Arts Literacy Website: Unit Assessments The Unit Assessments tab allows access to the ELA Calendar for Instruction, the teacher copy of grades K-12 Unit Assessments, and the Student copy of grades 2-12 Unit Assessments.
