What Does Christmas Mean? Does Christmas mean receiving presents? Does Christmas mean Santa Clause? Does Christmas mean profit? Does Christmas mean decorations and lighting? Does Christmas mean Christmas Carols? Does Christmas mean vacation and a week off? Does Christmas mean buying gifts? Does Christmas mean Christmas parties? Does Christmas mean anything other than the celebration of Christ’s birth? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you have no understanding about what Christmas really means. Christmas is supposed to be the celebration of Christ’s birth.

The Birth of Our Messiah Christmas is the celebration of the birth of: Our Messiah Our Redeemer Our Saviour Our Deliverer The Son of God The wise men from the east knew who Jesus was, but the local religious leaders and rulers had no idea that Jesus was their redeemer.

Matthew 2: Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. 3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. 5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, 6 And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. 7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. 9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. 13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

Wise Men and the World The usual display of of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus in the manger shows also the presence of the wise men. Matthew 2 seems to indicate that the wise men arrived two years after the birth of Jesus. They saw the star two years before their arrival in Jerusalem. This indicates that they were traveling for two years across the desert to Israel. Some think that these wise men were Persian while others think they either came from China or India. Jesus was around two years old when the wise men arrived thus when the Bible says in verse 11 that they came into the house, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus are no longer residing in a stable! Joseph probably setup a carpentry business in Bethlehem where he was residing with Mary and Jesus. The arrival of the wise men in Israel caused a big stir, for these were not a lowly band of men traveling across the desert, but it seems to indicate that they arrived with a whole caravan causing everyone to pay attention from the king and the Hebrew priests down to the common man on the street. Here were foreigners who came to worship the Son of God and the king of Israel. The religious hierarchy and leaders of Israel did not even realize the significance of the event for their eyes were closed to the Word of God. The men of the world are still clueless and have no idea as to what time it is. The Biblical prophecies are just old wives tales to them just like the religious leaders in Israel 2,000 years ago.

Worldly Wise Men vs. Godly Wise Men Do you consider yourself to have worldly wisdom or godly wisdom? Are you wise in the ways of the world without any godly knowledge? If this is your situation, then you need to consider the time. There are many who consider that they have godly wisdom but are in reality children of the world and not children of God. There are many preachers who fall into this category who preach the Bible but do not believe the Bible. Many use the Bible and Christianity to increase their financial wealth. These are not true Christian preachers, but are antichrist as described by the Apostle John. The 3 rd epistle of John describes such a preacher who was using the Gospel of Christ for his own benefit. Many godly saints are ridiculed by the world and even by worldly preachers. They describe the born-again saint of God as a holy roller religious fanatic. These hypocrites may have the wisdom of the world while having no godly wisdom. The wise men who crossed the desert to visit Jesus not only had the wisdom of the world, but they had the wisdom of God. They knew the prophecies and the time. They studied the scriptures and though they were not Hebrew, they had godly wisdom. The rabis and the religious leaders of Israel had the worldly knowledge of the scriptures, but not the spiritual knowledge. We need the spiritual knowledge, not just the head knowledge!
