Technical Analysis Using Excel and Bloomberg

What is Technical Analysis? A technical analysis of stocks involves the study of historical price and volume data to uncover trends and patterns that are expected to repeat in the future. A technical analyst uses charts and graphs and some statistical measures such as average and standard deviation to infer beneficial trading opportunities.

What is Technical Analysis? A fundamental analysis of stocks, on the other hand, involves the study of a firm’s actual and expected future performance. A fundamentalist employs various quantitative (e.g. the discounted cash flow technique) and qualitative (the expected state of the economy) measures and makes buy/sell decisions based on the expected performance of the firm relative to its current valuation.

Basic Assumptions of Technical Analysis Stock prices are determined by demand and supply, which in turn are determined by both rational and irrational factors. Stock prices move in trends and changes in trends are caused by demand and supply. Shifts in demand and supply can be detected by using charts and graphs.

Some Technical Indicators 1.Moving Averages: A price surge from below and a plunge from above the MA line indicate trends 2.Moving Average Envelopes: A price surge above the upper bound and a plunge below the lower bound indicate new trends

Some Technical Indicators 3. Relative Strength Index: Above 70 overbought and below 30 oversold. Divergence indicator 4. Money Flow Index: Above 80 overbought and below 20 is oversold. Divergence indicator 5. On Balance Volume: Trend and divergence
