The Festivals Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Pongal are celebrated in the month of January.

Makar-Sankranti marks the end of the winter season in North India and in South India festival celebrates the harvest of the paddy crop.

On the eve of Makar-Sakranti, The states of Punjab and Haryana celebrate the festival LOHRI in a very big way

Lohri is more than a festival for Punjabis. Children go from door to door, sing songs and collect funds for community bonfires which are lit up in the evening.

Logs of wood are piled together for a bonfire, and friends and relatives gather around it. They go around the fire three times, giving offerings of popcorns, peanuts, rayveri and sweets.

Friends and Relatives all together sit around the bonfire and eat Peanuts, Popcorn etc. They wish each other for a Happy Lohri !! The first Lohri of a newly wed bride and a new born child is considered very auspicious and important. People distribute sweets to Friends and Relatives.

There are fairs all around on Maghi (Makar – Sankranti) in Punjab. In South India people celebrate Pongal on Makar-Sankranti. Pongal is a very big festival in South India.

Traditional harvest festivals celebrated all over India in one or other form also tells us about the Unity and Similarity of the Indians.
