UNIT 4: DEPTH STUDY PART 2 PRESENTATION JANUARY 2016

UNIT 4: DEPTH STUDY PART (2) FROM 2016 Unit 4 is a continuation of the earlier part of the Depth Study which was studied for Unit 2 Learners are expected to build upon the knowledge and skills they have acquired in Unit 2 The focus is on assessment objectives AO1 and AO2 Learners must answer two questions: A compulsory source based question in question1 Either question 2 or question 3 which are traditional essay based questions

UNIT 4: DEPTH STUDY PART (2) FROM 2016 THE CONTENT OF UNIT 4 The content of each option in Unit 4 leads on from that studied in Unit 2 and is set out around CONCEPTS / PERSPECTIVES to make it manageable and to provide some structure for Centres Each has a number of content sub-sections with a clear historical focus Each MUST be studied – there are no alternative routes through the specification.

UNIT 4: DEPTH STUDY PART (2) FROM 2016 THE COVERAGE OF THE UNIT We have to insist that there is complete coverage of the course since the source based question in Unit 4 is compulsory

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN UNIT 4 AND UNIT 2 UNIT 4: DEPTH STUDY PART (2) FROM 2016 THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN UNIT 4 AND UNIT 2 The specification for each Unit 4 option says: This is a continuation of the earlier part of the depth study studied for Unit 2. Knowledge and understanding previously learnt in Unit 2 should be utilised when addressing the content of Unit 4. Unit 4 also provides an opportunity to assess both the skills and knowledge gained in Unit 2, where appropriate. This ensures progression from AS and shows a strong element of synoptic learning in the overall depth study. The mark scheme for the assessments in Unit 4 says: Candidates should be rewarded for making connections and comparisons between elements of both parts of the depth study, where relevant.

UNIT 4: DEPTH STUDY PART (2) FROM 2016 QUESTION 1 IN UNIT 4 The question posed is the same as that in Unit 2. For example: With reference to the sources and your understanding of the historical context, assess the value of these three sources to an historian studying Nazi racial policy after 1933. [30]

UNIT 4: DEPTH STUDY PART (2) FROM 2016 QUESTION 1 IN UNIT 4 The skills are the same as in Unit 2 Understanding of the historical context remains the key But the sources will be greater in length The ideas and language used in the sources will be more complex

UNIT 4: DEPTH STUDY PART (2) FROM 2016 ESSAYS IN UNIT 4 The types of essay set will be similar to those used in the old HY4 essays As there are no nominated topics, the essays can come from anywhere in the content specified Coverage expected can be narrower due to the nature of the depth study

UNIT 4: DEPTH STUDY PART (2) FROM 2016 ANSWER EITHER QUESTION 2 OR QUESTION 3 2. How far do you agree that the most significant development in popular culture between the wars was the availability of radio? [30] 3. ‘Life for the people of Wales and England was substantially better in 1939 than it had been in 1933.’ Discuss. [30]
