AMERICA BUILDS AN EMPIRE

American Expansionism  Why Now?  Industrialization (new markets for raw materials & finished goods)  Progressive Movement (reform not only U.S., but world)  Manifest Destiny (God would want us to continue to expand)

Join Euro. powers in global competition Est. colonies & influence overseas Imperialism Imperialism = stronger nations extend their econ, political, or military control over smaller territories

American Imperialism  Expand size of nation & influence beyond borders – West & South of U.S.  Need to build up military strength to compete  Adm. Alfred T. Mahan = Urged gov. to build up naval power = World’s 3 rd largest navy; dubbed “Great White Fleet” by T.R.

Thirst for New Markets Industrial Revolution  Produce more than Am. use &  need for raw materials  Foreign trade = new sources of raw materials & new markets

Belief in Cultural Superiority  Progressive Reformers energized from success of reforms in U.S. = “we can reform the world”  Combine Christian progressive reform ideology w/Social Darwinism = racial superiority of Anglo-Saxons  Spread Christianity & “civilize” (reform) world’s “inferior people”  Same idea of Americanization movement used for Nat. Americans & immigrants  Racism entwined with it too

Where to Start??? Hawaii!!  Location = Refueling point for merchants & military to China  Already have U.S. biz. there  Am.-owned sugar planters = own ¾ islands’ wealth = POWER  Am. planters wanted Pres. McKinley to annex (take over) Hawaii = no taxes on imports to mainland; save biz. $

Kingdom of Hawaii  Am. planters used political influence against King Kalakaua of Hawaii  Amend Hawaii’s constitution to ONLY allow wealthy landowners (Am. biz. owners) to vote  King died before signing; Queen Liliuokalani takes throne –  Won’t be bullied like her bro  “A Hawaii for Hawaiians”

Hawaii’s Fate  REVOLUTION – Am. biz. Owners overthrew Queen (w/help from U.S. Marines)  Pres. McKinley annexed Hawaii – 1898  Becomes Am. territory  Hawaiians not allowed to vote  Est. military hub for Pacific P.H.  Statehood (#50) = 1959

Where to Next?? Caribbean; to rid Spain out of U.S.’s backyard!! Spanish-American War

SUMMARIZE & CTQs  Recap the main ideas from the previous slide notes explaining what you have learned.
