 Surface Area: 7,904,959 km2  Population: 195 million, Egypt being the most populous with 91 million  Languages: Arabic (common to all countries) and French  Total GDP: $ 842 billion (2015)  Egypt: $ 331 billion (2015)  Algeria: $ 255 billion (2015)  Morocco: $ 100 billion (2015)  Sudan: $ 84 billion (2015)  Tunisia: $ 43 billion (2015)  Libya: $ 29 billion (2015)

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS Egypt  Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade  New system to enforce the protection of trademarks and limit the infringement acts  Through a smartphone application or sending an SMS, the consumer will be able to verify instantly if a certain product is original or not  Verification message will include the product's name and the expiry date  Trademark owners can place a “sticker” put on all the products that are sold in the Egyptian market and registered at the Egyptian Trademarks Office  Ministry of Trade and Industry  Decree 43/2016: amending the rules organising the registration of factories qualified to export certain products to Egypt  Requires factories and companies to export listed products and to register their trademarks with the General Organisation for Export and Import Control (GOEIC)

Algeria  October 31, 2015: Became a member of the Protocol Relating to the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks  Gives a trademark owner the possibility to have his mark protected in several countries by simply filing one application with a single office, in one language  Brand owners in Algeria will also benefit by gaining access to the territories covered by the Madrid Protocol for international trademark protection Tunisia  One of the latest country to ratify the WIPO’s Beijing Treaty on Audiovisual Performances Morocco  Official fees for trademark applications submitted online has been increased by 20%  Renewal official fees have also been increased by 20%  Effective since 1 March 2016 LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

TRADEMARK PROTECTION OVERVIEW  Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia : Multiple-Class Applications.  Libya, Sudan : Single Class Applications.  Libya, Sudan : Goods in Class 33 & 32 cannot be registered.  Opposition procedures (opposition period between 30 and 90 days) are available in all countries; except for Algeria.  Use is not required for registration or renewal, except for Algeria (renewal).  Registration vulnerable to cancellation by any interested party in the event of 3-5 years of non- use.  All are member of the Madrid Agreement; except for Libya.

PATENT PROTECTION OVERVIEW  All are contracted parties of PCT.  Annuities are due on the anniversary of the international filing date.  Except for Libya.  Egypt : Local Substantive Examination.  No examination in Algeria, Libya and Morocco.  Absolute novelty required in Algeria, Sudan and Tunisia.  Novelty is relative in Egypt and Morocco.  Novelty isLocal in Libya.
