Make Agreements Cautiously July 24

Admit it, now … What is one of the dumbest things you have ever bought? Most of these things didn’t cost us too much. – More serious are purchases or investments that lose us significant amounts of money – Today we look at warnings to avoid financial obligations that could sink you.

Listen for who’s in charge. Proverbs 22:7 (NLT) Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender.

Debt Can Enslave Us What practical principle does this proverb reinforce? What obligation does the borrower assume in relationship to a lender? So then, how does a person becomes subservient to a rich person from whom he/she has borrowed? Why are so many people willing to accept debt in today’s culture?

Debt Can Enslave Us How do you think the writer of Proverbs would respond to this statement? Credit cards are great because I can get what I want now and pay for it whenever I’m able in the future!

Listen for a warning. Proverbs 6:1-2 (HCSB) My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor or entered into an agreement with a stranger, 2 you have been trapped by the words of your lips— ensnared by the words of your mouth.

Indebtedness May Not Be Wise What sort of commitment do these two verses warn us about? Along with cosigning a note or going into a financial agreement with an unfamiliar business associate, what other kinds of financial traps can we get into? What determines whether an investment is wise or foolish?

Indebtedness May Not Be Wise What are the principles of how a mousetrap works? In what ways are foolish financial decisions like being trapped or ensnared? Consider that “predators” who set financial traps are – persuasive – promising But … they actually prey upon us and our financial means.

Indebtedness May Not Be Wise Besides burdening a person with debt, what other problems are brought on by unwise financial decisions? How would one’s age affect financial decisions we might make?

Listen for advice. Proverbs 6:3-5 (NLT) Follow my advice and save yourself, for you have placed yourself at your friend’s mercy. Now swallow your pride; go and beg to have your name erased. 4 Don’t put it off; do it now! Don’t rest until you do. 5 Save yourself like a gazelle escaping from a hunter, like a bird fleeing from a net.

Work to Get Untangled from Debt What should the person do who has put up security for his or her neighbor? Why is putting up security for your neighbor a harmful thing to do? What imagery does the writer use in his advice?

Work to Get Untangled from Debt What can we learn from this imagery? How can we avoid making unwise commitments? How do we navigate the tension between avoiding entanglements and wanting to help those in need?

Application Get advice – Take some time this week to learn more about cosigning loans and other common financial agreements. – Pursue knowledge to gain greater confidence about which agreements are helpful and which should be avoided.

Application Get out – If you are currently caught in a harmful financial obligation, identify one step you can take to begin the process of rescuing yourself – Then … take that step!

Application Get together – Make sure your friends and family members are aware of the dangers involved with co-signing and other harmful entanglements. – Share with children and grandchildren some of these same warnings
