SPANISH LITERATURE FEDERICO GARCÍA LORCA

INDEX INTRODUCTION. LORCA'S LIFE. QUOTES. LORCA'S WORKS, THE WRITER. La Casa de Bernarda Alba (Theater)

INTRODUCTION ● He was an important author in "Generación del 27" because of his literary work and his role in cultural life. ● A generation is a group of literary writers who were born on close dates and moved by an event of their day, and they face the same problems.

LORCA'S LIFE

Federico García Lorca was born in Fuentevaqueros(Granada) on the 5 th of June 1898.

LORCA'S LIFE Lorca was executed during the Spanish Civil War (Víznar, 19 th of August 1936) and people think that the causes of their implementation are its affinity with the Popular Front, being openly homosexual and family problems. During his life Lorca travelled to New York, where after facing his homosexuality, suicidal tendencies and deep loneliness, he was able to regain his balance. (which influenced his style and works).

QUOTES Poetry is the union of two words you never meant that they could join together, and form something like a mystery. The most terrible feeling is the feeling of having lost hope. As I have not worried to be born, do not worry about dying. The theater is poetry that comes out of the book and becomes human.

LORCA'S WORK-THE WRITER Lorca was ”a rich child in a humble village”. All the things he did and all the places where he went, were a really important fact in his whole life, that events had influence in his poetry and in his theater. He wrote poetry and theater. But he set up a theater company called ”La barraca” and his theater works became popular and successful.

La Casa de Bernarda Alba (Theater) La Casa de Bernarda Alba is one of the most known plays written by Lorca. In this play, the women are the main characters and he tries to create a social drama in a rural house (he wants to be realistic), but it doesn't mention when the events are happening exactly, may be in the morning, or in the evening... Lorca highlights the women's repression. And he emphasizes the feelings of the characters through the language.

La Casa de Bernarda Alba (Theater) This play's mundial premiere was 8th march, 1945 in the Teatro Avenida de Buenos Aires. And in Spain, was 20 th March, 1950 by the company Teatro de Ensayo (La Carátula), Madrid. After this, the play was censured and it wasn't be played until 10 years later.

The plot Bernarda Alba, widow of two marriages, announces to her five daughters (of marriageable age) that the next eight years any man will not enter into her house. But the younger, Adela, not willing to give up in the heat of the men, in particular Pepe, 'el Romano'. He wants to marry Angustias, the older and more heritage than the other, meeting Adela as well, hidden from Bernarda, and when she finds out, Adela confronts his mother with the truth. But Bernarda determined to avenge her daughter, her honor and disobedience, shoots against 'el Romano' and Adela, who believes her lover is dead, hangs herself.

When and where is the story set? When: in the story you can know if it is in the morning or in the evening, but you can't know how many days have happened. Lorca is not so explicit. Where: The story is set in a rural house, but the place is closed, because in every act, the scene is the same, the house where all the things happen.

Main Characters Bernarda Alba is a 60 years old widow. Bernarda's daughters: Angustias: the oldest sister, who will inherit the most of the money. (39 years old). Magdalena (30 years) and Amelia (27 years) are, more or less, irrelevant in this play. Martirio:the sister who is in love with el Romano. (24 years). Adela: the youngest sister, who is meeting el Romano sneaking. (20 years). Poncia is Bernarda's servant.
