● Tetro is a film directed by Francis Ford Coppola, it is the story of a young man who met his brother in Buenos Aires many years after their last meeting. Expecting a warm reunion, the Hero, Bennie, is really disappointed by the distant greeting given by his own brother,Tetro. Indeed Tetro went to Argentina hoping for a place which would not remind him of his past. But Bennie does not understand his way of acting and tries to discover what is wrong. After long searches Bennie finally discovered a very serious secret: His brother is in fact his father and his mother is in reality his grand mother ● Great Expectations is a novel written by Charles Dickens, the famous english writter. Throughout the book we follow the life of a young man, Philip Pirrip, nicknamed Pip, from his childhood to his middle age. All his life Pip looks for 2 main things: How to become a gentleman but above all how to forge his own identity. The book begins in a very monotone way, we are following the everyday life of a worker from the lower class, but suddenly some events completely change his life and make him enter the upper-class. That sudden change is one of the factor of his identity crisis. ● Oedipus Rex is a play written by Sophocles in Antiquity but which was rewritted several times those last years. It is the story of Oedipus who was left by his parents, the King and the Queen of Delphes, when he was a baby because they had been told by the oracle told of Delphi that he would kill his father and marry his mother. Finally bred by the royal family of Corinth, Oedipus decided when he became a young adult to leave that family after being told the prophecy because he thought that was his real family and he did not want that prophecy to become true. Finally after alot of events the prophecy became true and Oedipus killed his father without knowing who he was and married his mother also without knowing it.

● There are some similarities between tetro and the mistress's daughter. One of them is the fact that in both works, the hero is first hidden the truth and then has to face a revelation. Indeed when he comes to Buenos Aires Bennie does not know at all that he is going to discover a terrible secret, he is innocent just like Amy is when she is aked by her mother to come into the living-room in order to be revealed a secret. Their reaction is not exactly the same but both have a mixed reaction of uncomprehension and hunger. But finally they both remain calm despite the revelation they just had to face, for example Bennie managed to remain motionless while his « father » asks him to kill him and Amy managed to start her investigation despite the fact that she is still under the shock of the revelation. ● The main similarity between Great Expectations and the Mistress's Daughter is their quest of identity. Their quest is not exactly the same but both try to build their identity. Pip tries to forge his own identity by living his small village and by meeting new personalities and among them the woman he falls in love with, Estella. Finally his destiny will led him from the bottom of the society to the top and then to the bottom again but that surprising fate will help him in forging his own identity. Amy starts an investigation, she starts looking for infomations about her real parents to know more about her past and so to make up her identity because as you may know the past of a person is an important part of her identity. ● There are also some similitaries between Oedipus Rex and the Mistress's Daughter. In our opinion the most important is the fact that the two heroes know that their fate, and their identity, are not very common and that something in their past is not very clear. For Oedipus it is the prophecy he was told when he was still living in Corinth which may indicates him that his identity might be troubled in a very close future. For Amy it is the fact that she knows that she has been adopted when she was young. In both case we can't say that they could have discovered the secret on their own but in both cases we can consider it as a clue.

● « what has happened to our family? - Rivalry » «He really doesn't want to know his family anymore » « People around here don't know much about me. I want to keep it that way » ● « As I never saw my father or my mother, and never saw any likeness of either of them, my first fancies regarding what they were like, were unreasonably derived from their tombstone ». « I was fated to lie with my mother and show to daylight an accursed breed which men would not endure, and I was doomed to be murderer of the father that begot me » ●
