2015 Clean Water Farm Award BILLY A HUDSON

At the Barn Here Senior District Conservationist P.W. Morgan (left) stands next to Billy Hudson (right) next to the new Winter Feeding Facility installed through EQIP with NRCS.

Winter Feeding Facility Looking into the Winter Feeding Facility one can see the waste storage at the far end where waste from the feeding livestock will be collected and later land applied. This facility designed to house and feed the cattle during winter months and inclement weather to reduce erosion that would result from concentrated feeding on bare ground.

Out to Pasture Here is one of the permanent cross fences which divide the pasture into grazing paddocks which are used in accordance with the grazing plan so that the forage has a chance to recover between grazing and reduce erosion.

Clean Water With the streams fenced off water troughs such as these provide a source of clean water for the cattle which reduces the chance for disease and injury by climbing in and out of streams and reducing erosion. Here the trough is placed in the fence line allowing it to be utilized from either side reducing the number of troughs and pipeline needed lessoning the impact of the instillation.

Riparian Buffer In the distance you can make out the stream exclusion fence that prohibits the cattle from accessing the surface water. This allows for natural regrowth of native flora and development of fauna. This also reduces bank erosion and sedimentation and allows for the overland treatment of waste allowing for healthier water, healthier vegetation, and healthier livestock.
