Plugs and Bulbs Lv3: Identify the parts of a light bulb. Lv4: Wire a plug correctly. Lv5: Explain the safety features of a plug. Entrance Activity Neutral Earth Live Filament Fuse Cable grip Describe the term current in your books. Include information about how it is measured, what it is measured in, and any other information you know.

Learning Activity Drawing Bulbs Collect a light bulb from the front of the classroom (One between two) Attempt to draw the inside of the light bulb as accurately as you can.

Learning Activity Next, add the following labels onto your picture. -Filament -Support wire -Screw thread -Electrical contact -Glass mount Teacher explanation Explain the function of each part of the light bulb to students and allow them to take notes.

Mini Whiteboard Activity What’s the part? What’s the function? A D B C E

There is an easy way to remember where to connect each wire. Take the second letters of the words blue, brown and striped. This reminds you that when you look into a plug from above: Blue goes left Brown goes right Striped goes to the top Learning Activity Wiring Plugs

WireColourFunction Earth Neutral Wire Live Learning Activity Plug Parts Prevents plug from giving the user an electric shock if live wire touches metal case. This wire completes the electrical circuit. This wire is the source of electricity for the appliance. Functions

Student Reading Activity Plug Safety Features Safety features of a plug The three pin plug has a number of safety features. The first is the fuse. The fuse prevents the appliance (kettle, oven, microwave) from being supplied with to much electricity. The fuse has a thin wire inside of it which melts if the current gets too high. Once this wire melts no more electricity can be supplied to the appliance. Learning Activity Summarise the paragraph above in no more than two sentences. Include the terms: Fuse, current, appliance, and melts.

Teacher Explanation Plug Safety Features Safety features of a plug Explain the following safety features to the students. -Earth wire -Cabel wire -Outer Insulation

Plenary True or False Activity When electricity is passed through the filament of a bulb it begins to glow producing a bright light. A plug contains 3 main wires- the earth, the negative, and the live. Fuses are made of a thin wire which melts if a large current is passed through it. The neutral wire carries electricity to the appliance. The insulating wire prevents electricity from escaping out of the metal wire and giving the user an electrical shock. True False
